Try giving her Popsicles instead, there cold, that will help her throat, and what kid do you know who doesn't like Popsicles.
also they sell teddy bears suckers at your local drug stores, that are for sore throats, and helps ease the soreness that come with sore throats.
Just look in the cold & flu section at the drug store for children.

Been there when I was a kid! Make sure she gets some form of healthy liquids in her. V-8 juice (V-8 Splash is good too), yogurt smoothies, even Ensure or Slim-Fast (protein and vitamins in both of those). I used to get fruit juice slushies from places like Orange Julius. The cold helped, plus get some vitamins/protein powder stirred in and it will help keep her strength up a lot. Just soda right now is not a good thing - she needs to heal, which takes vitamins and healthy calories.
DEFINITELY go for the hot salt water gargle - it will literally pull the bacteria out of the throat. Make sure she spits though. You swallow it, you end up spreading around the bacteria and voila, stomach flu.
Remember though - no straws! Sucking hard on a straw is not good right now. Just causes more pain (even more important if tonsils come out - can cause major bleeding post-surgery).
Good luck and I hope she feels better soon!

i had tonsilitis 8 times in 6 months- i drank jello water (just make the jello like you normally would, except add cold water instead of the hot) and pedialite is also really good for her right now.
you might also give her popsicles and sherbet style ice cream (avoid real ice cream, the milk in it irritates the throat)
also, you can make her smoothies with the recipe that follows- just remember to avoid anything with milk in it
2/3 cup frozen ingredients (like frozen fruit)
1/3 cup liquid ingredients (like fruit juice or lemon lime soda)
sugar as needed for flavor
mix it all up in a blender until smooth
i buy the bags of frozen mixed fruits to make the smoothies with- avoid the berries right now tho- the seeds will hurt going down
you can top it for her with a non-dairy whipped topping such as cool whip

The warm salt water gargle is KEY to tonsilitis. It sucks but it will definitely work. And I drink tea like there's no tomorrow when I have tonsilitis.

Try hot tea with a little warm milk and sugar in it. It is soothing for your throat.

I always gargled with warm sea salt water. It helps alot!
I was told to avoid milk because it produces phlegm (and the process of coughing that up is very irritating to your throat).
Cranberry and Grape juice work well, too, because they are very 'dry'.
