Offer a mix of music. It's not much fun for the older people like me to have to listen to rap or indie rock all night. Get a DJ to handle it- they know what and when to play.

Get a DJ, he will probably ask for your input, but will give recommendations as well. They usually have a playlist of songs you can choose from. At the weddings I've been to, the music has been "all over the place" - some 60s, 70s and 80s dance music, as well as some slow songs thrown in; usually maybe 2-3 fast songs and a slow song to "break it up". Usually dancing starts after people have eaten (and hopefully had had a chance to have drinks, too!)

You play whatever style music you and your future wife/husband likes. Mostly upbeat music something that people can dance to,although you could throw a slow song into the mix every once in a while. Normally people start dancing after everyone eats or does anything thing extra. Dancing usually comes last and then people can just leave whenever they feel like so they wont miss any of the other things you have going on.

Your DJ should be able to help you select the right kind of music that will please every one at the reception from old blue eyes to eminem. But I would suggest songs that are special to you and your new spouse as well, and maybe some family favorites to make your parents and siblings feel apart of the event, especially if there is music that is specific to your culture or religion. Lastly, you can play music all throughout the reception -- with easy listening during the meal. Once you have finished eating and you have danced your first dance with your new spouse as a married couple, that is usually the cue to open the dance floor. Well, good luck with everything and don't forget to post pictures!!!!!

It’s nice to have a variety, Most wedding stay with the old classics everyone knows like brown eyed girl by (Van Morrison) Pieces of April (Three Dog Night) Don’t let th sun catch you crying (Gary and the Pacemakers) you get the idea, then as the night progresses you can do the electric slide and slide into a little more rock. Here is a song you can use for your dance with dear old dad Go to http://www.fairplaymusicalgifts.com/samples.html and download (Song for The Parents of The Bride”You can also do a dance, get everyone on the floor to slow dance and start eliminating people by asking people who been married less than a year, and then less than 5 years and then less than 10 and so on and so on until the last person married the longest is last.

Whether you choose a band or DJ, you will need a variety of music, both fast & slow. Grandma isn't gonna want to get down & boogey to Snoop Dog but she might to the Beatles.

An experienced musician/DJ will understand this. But just in case, clue them in. I've been to some receptions where the DJ plays music for his young generation only making the event less desirable.

Dancing starts after the food is served and eaten....usually the bride and groom start the dancing alone with a slow song they pick out..then a mixed bag of music...fast slow, whatever you like. Good luck

Well, of course you have different stages of music for that kind of event.....

1. Mood music for guests arriving before the wedding/reception begins (ballads, musical ballads, classics)
2. After the Wedding, Speeches and during dinner you should have more upbeat music (ballads to upbeat music including classics)
3. After dinner you can then mix the music with ballads and dance numbers so the bride and groom and guests can join in the dance....music for everyone.

If you hire a DJ they will play a nice mix of music for all young and old fast and slow for your reception. Usually you have a quick bite to eat then you and your husband have your first dance, then you and your dad dance, then him and his monther dance then the dance floor is open to all.

I had a traditional Scottish Ceilidh (kay-lee) we started off with "our song" which was a slow one, then another slowish one for couples to dance, then on to the country dancing, then after the evening buffet was served we had a DJ and a good mix of fast/slow/modern/golden oldies etc.
