This dog has serious temperament problems and you need to correct it now before he bites someone. Why is he being allowed to snap at people? There is no room in this world anymore for vicious, undisciplined and untrained dogs. Get this dog to obedience classes where someone can teach you how to train your dog!

Shar-Pei can wear muzzles but they need one designed for their face. Check this site they sell good muzzles. http://www.fordogtrainers.com/browseproducts/Index22.html
The next is a crate, when this dog isn't muzzled and supervised he needs to be crated. You should use the type of crate that doesn't allow fingers to be inserted by foolish people. Something like airlines use.
He can't be around people unmuzzled until you are certain he is behaving properly and the trainer has okayed it. Never leave him unmuzzled around children.
You may never be able to have this dog safely unmuzzled around non-family members. Your trainer will be better able to advise on this after assessing the dog.
Drugs are not good unless the dog is muzzled. Drugs will lower a dog's bite inhibition causing the dog to bite more unpredictably.
You need some serious help with your dog. You understand that you have a problem which is great and you can deal with this. The muzzle is absolutely needed until the dogs issues are resolved because if this dog bites you are liable, you will be blamed and the dog will be put to sleep.
I hope I haven't been too disheartening. Aggressive dogs usually can live normal healthy happy lives if you handle them properly. Right now you need to forget about kid friendly. Nobody wants their child bite by any dog for any reason. If your dog handles adults properly in time you can work on him with kids.
Good luck

Is he fixed? If not, get him fixed ASAP. He's obviously not of a temperament that should EVER be bred.
How long is he left alone? Are you "at work" (away) 8+ hours a day? Then he needs a pet sitter to come in a pay attention to him. Anything more than 4-5 hours of being left alone on a regular basis is borderline neglect. Many dogs develop severe behavioural problems because of this kind of "care".
Was he bought from a good breeder? This means a breeder who shows their dogs, gave your lengthy contract (include a neuter requirement), asked you a ton of questions, possibly visited your home, etc? If not, then the problem may be genetic. Backyard breeders are notorious for breeding low quality animals to make money or 'for fun'.
How does your family punish him? Hitting, yelling, swatting, spanking, screaming, rubbinghis nose in stuff, jerking on him, choke chains, etc? If so, this is where part of the problem originated. Violence creates violence in some dogs. Especially breeds like this that have aggressive tendencies.
He needs to get into some sort of behaviour nodification program ASAP. Private traning lessons with a GOOD trainer are necessary.
I also agree with contacting not just Shar Pei rescue, but also joining a Shar Pei group http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=shar+pei , and contacting your local breed club. They will have all kinds of advice and contacts for you.
This needs to be taken care of or Animal Control may be knocking at your door one day soon with a court order to confiscate the dog. Start sending e-mails, joining groups, and making calls ASAP. If you don't have the time, then your dog needs to be rehomed via Shar Pei rescue. And don't get another dog until you've done full research on the breed (I know, those wrinkles are SOOO cute!) and are prepared for all the things that come with dog ownership.
I hope it works out for the best. : )

jr's an idiot...hasn't been overbred??? in the seventies they found that there were only 6 shar-pei's living... so lets think about how much intense inbreeding had to occur to reach the numbers they are at now....hmmmmm
and fighting dogs weren't bred to protect anyone, they were bred to fight....and aren't very loyal because for centuries they have been traded and sold for fighting...

Good drugs will definitely do the trick. They worked for me and my snapping problems where a muzzle didnt fit me that well either.

Shar-peis are famous for that. It is their breed.
What I would suggest is that you contact a shar-pei rescue group and see if they have any suggestions for you.
Go to: http://www.mypetnanny.info/PD/Rescues/AT/dogs_rescues.htm
I have a great idea for you. This would be a great case for Cesar Millan "The Dog Whisper". They are looking for cases. I would highly recomend that you try and contact them. This could help save your dog's life. Go to: http://www.dogpsychologycenter.com/
