Mine (all 4) do this when its hot or if its been rubbing on something for a while (like a socks or my belt). The only part that swells is the places where its colored red. It will itch like a bug bite too. I just put cortizone on it and its fine. Is the part that puffs up red? I have heard alot of people complain about the red ink.

This is normal. There is an explanation to this. For instance: Say you just get a new tattoo on your wrist. While it is healing, if you wear long sleeves and the sleeve rubs against your tat is effects the way it heals. This can happen to any tattoo on any part of your body. It is also the reason why some tattoos do this and some dont. Anytime a new tattoo rubs against clothing or maybe even a bed while your sleeping, it effects the healing process. Its not dangerous and it wont mess up your tattoo or anything so dont worry. Tell him not to worry about it. If he is still concerned, tell him to go to the tattoo artist and ask them about it. They'll be able to help you and give you suggestions.

From personal expereience, the number one reason a tattoo gets 'puffy' is that it is one of the colors that is murcury based (all purples and most reds), and has been exposed to too much sunlight. In time it will go down, but the color will also fade on such tattoos. Keep it out of sunlight and don't get purples in future tattoos. I have this same problem, as I played with murcury as a child, and am reactive to tattoo inks based on it.

Ive had the one on my back for 5 years and it is still raised. When I get hot I find it itches. It doesnt sound like theres anything wrong with your boyfriends tattoo. If it was blood poisoning it wouldve made him really ill a lot sooner than a year after getting it done

i have lots of tattoos and they do raise from time to time, generally when im really hot. the thing to remember is that tattoo ink stays liquid under your skin so it may well swell up when warm. i would keep an eye on it and consult a doctor if really worried but sounds normal 2 me.

best cure for this, tell him to apply a little savlon cream on it, it'll take the itch out and calm the puffiness down......have 2 tattoos myself and my bf has 8, his do this all the time when he gets hot or sweaty and sometimes when he's stressed, but if you're still worried go to the tat artist and ask about it........but savlon does the trick, i know from experience, good luck and try not to worry!

I know for a fact that it's not normal. He could have an infection, because your tatoos should never do that. I have 3, and one of them is on the inside of my left wrist. It is also small, but it had never raised up or anything. I've probably even scracted it sometime before, and its still never done anything. Tatoos should only be puffy up to a week after getting them, then they settle. They should never rise up again, especially after having it for a year.

mine do that too and ive had a couple for about 4 years. if you get hot or start to itch then they tend to raise up and feel almost like scar tissue to the touch and itch like mad.
If it goes red and looks sore then check with your gp otherwise let it be. you might find that olding something cold against it for a while with it starts itching might help or using a body lotion.
