I am thinking of using a dating site and I was wondering how long should I email someone before asking for their number. Ideally, I'd like to get the number after maybe 2 or 3 because I wouldn't want to stay in a guessing phase like some people do for like weeks at a time.

Yes, definitely more than two or three, but less than six to eight The numbers depend on how much is said in each email, the separation. For me, in the beginning, I would be listing hobbies, basic physical characteristics (height, weight, age and so forth). Then I may mention a bit about my job, basic likes and dislikes. Then I would want to talk about my philosophy of life. Since this is easier to this is easier to talk about then write, I would then want to speak to the person at this point. All this assumes of course that I am getting positive feedback from the other person.during this time.

I would say that a couple of weeks of e-mail should be enough for you to know if you want to continue things over the phone. Everyone works differently, but the purpose is to date, so you do want to get the ball rolling.
I also agree with answer number 1. There is nothing weirder than when someone just wants to start phoning from the get go. Sometimes you just do not want to get that personal that fast.

Depends on the quality of emails. Some people write 3 lines, ending with CALL ME and there's nothing to intrigue a person. Email for about a week and call.

try 2-3 volleys, meaning you write and she responds = 1 volley.
let it go back and fro in 2-3 sets before you go for phone chatting.

you will find out how serious she is of you if it lasts that long in email.
remember, she is "shopping" others while she is emailing you so she can drop you after the first or not respond at all.
thats the reason to wait for at least 2 or 3.

I met a man online that I am still having a relationship with. We waited about a month to finally make that call. It is weird since you feel you know this person but you really dont.
