The thread on Cameras in Schools got me thinking about this. This debate also came up after the shootings at Columbine.

The advantages are obvious:

1: If there is a school shooting, you have easy access to a phone.
2: If you need to call home because you forgot something, you don't have to waste money on payphones

Disadvantages:

1: Distraction. School is for learning and not for playing.
2: The new cell phones with cameras would be a big privacy problem.

The only advantage, is if the school is under siege, you can call for help, other than that, cell phones should be left off during school hours.
In my daughters school you are not allowed to take them to school. They don't allow mp3 players either, because of the money factor. They don't want the drama of kids losing them or having them stolen and then dealing with angry parents calling the schools. There is a time and place for everything and school is one place cell phones shouldn't be.

(Most of the answers for advantages list playing games during boring lessons kind of proves the point that cell phones shouldn't be in class)

Advantages for me is that I would easily be able to call up a family member or a friend if I suddenly needed it. If I could listen to music on my phone, this kind of tags along iPods, I would be able to at least during lunch etc etc.
Disadvantages, I for one pay to be in school, and I want a good education. Having cell phones ringing all the time is NO help whatsoever with me trying to do that.

Need a ride after school, running late? Cell phones are good but should be turned off during class.

well advantages are that if the kids parents are usually late in picking them up the kid can call them and see where they are, or if the parents are wanting to reach their kid to tell them that they're running late. the disadvantages are that kids usually forget to turn them off or put them on silent, so if it rings they'll probably get into trouble. and that's pretty much it so it's not a big deal to have one if your going to school.

I think that children should be able to have them in school as long as they are on vibrate because of the way things are going in the world parents need to be able to reach their children at all times but I believe that some dishonest children will use their phones to cheat on test, so maybe they should have to be on the child's desk during test.

Cell phones should not be allowed in school. In my opinion, kids are there to learn, not text on a phone, or play games and chat.

kids are in school to learn not to talk on the phone. no phones in school. i went through school without one & so did my kids.
i do think though that they should let them have them for out of town after school activities to notifiy parents that cant attend as to when to pick them up or when they will be home. Other than that---call the office to give your child a message

I go to school and i know how annoying it can be when a teacher takes a phone off you in the playground.
I mean i didnt use it in their lesson even though it was so boring i was going mad!!
If you dont use them in lessons they should be fine.
