Some say the Irish can drink more, some will say that the Scottish or Germans can drink more. What culture do you think can drink the most and why?

I think the Russians win with the practice of 'zapoi'. From what I gather, zapoi is a social event which essentially consists of constant drinking with the intent of maintaining a drunken state for days on end, which at times can apparently last into weeks.

I used to spend a lot of time in Mexico, and the bartenders and waitstaff there, who see people from all over the globe, always maintained that no one can drink like the Australians. Bottoms up!

At one point in time I can remember reading that people in Russia drank more spirits per capita then anywhere else in the world.
It would be interesting to dig up who actually consumes more alcohol. Part of me thinks that China due to it's huge population would consume the largest quantity of alcohol. Hmmmm
I almost forgot.... You wondered why they drank so much. Economic hardship, extreme climate, and most likely severe depression caused the Russians to drink and drink and drink and drink...

Germans have the reputation for drinking so I would have to say germany. My relatives are German and can drink from sun up to sundown.

I would say in my state of West Virginia USA because that is all there is to do here. Drink Beer.

i think it is definitely the europeans they have alcohol with every meal for the most part. i have german relatives who can drink and drink and drink so that is my source.

Australia!! But we are in the midst of our driest month, Australians drink less alcohol in feb than any other month, why??? There is less days haha

Even though I've heard it's Russia, I've actually experienced NORWAY first hand. Those guys (all ages and both sexes) are truly unbelievable!
