...a mix of a Jack Russel Terrier and a Poodle.....
I just don't understand these "designer dogs"

There are TONS of "designer dogs" at shelters needing homes that cost less than $100.

Why are people buying these things????

I agree with you. "Designer" dogs are nothing more than a crossbreed. You can go to your local shelter and get a "Shabradore" (Shepherd/Lab) for much less. You can make up a name (as I just did) with any mixed or crossbreed and say it's "designer". As a child, they used to give the mixed or crossbreeds away. That is something that I personally wouldn't pay that much for, but, if you love the dog and you are willing to pay the price, I am in no position to criticize anyone for what type of dog they choose to purchase.

I agree. If a person is wants a purebred dog with predictable characteristics that they can put in dog shows, they buy a purebred dog. If a person doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg on a good dog, they're willing to be prepared for some less predictable traits, and they just want it as an overall awesome companion that doesn't need to be placed in dog shows, they get a mutt.

"Designer dogs" are the negative of both purebreds and mutts. You spend a fortune buying them, but you can't put them in dog shows or have them registered. Their parents are purebreds, so you have a small idea as to what the dog will turn out like, but to an extent, it's almost as unpredictable as a mutt puppy.

People are really better off going to their animal shelter and rescuing a good dog from there.

idiots, my purebred poodle did not even cost half that.

Back before these mutts had designer labels I bought a cockapoo for $100 becuase the owners bredd poodles and cocker spaniels but their male spaniel accicdently got with their female poodle, they were just oops dogs and the breeder was asking $100 to cover their puppy expenses. I bought her because she was the cutest sweetest thing and still is she is 8 now.

I understand why people like the poodle crosses becuase they shed less and are better for people with allergies but come on.

I guess then my boxer/ shepherd mix could be designer, so I got a good deal when I adopted her for $55 lol :)

thats an outrageous sum of money even for a purbred of either of the breed. The person selling these is making a fortune and your neighbor is a total and complete idiot for buy it. Man i hope that dog was bred with a pure 100 carat gold coat in order for them to be dumb enough to pay that money. If I were you i would anonimously put a letter to them sighting what other designer Jackapoos sold for in papers, and some articles about designer bred dogs.... my PUREBRED SHOW CARDIGAN WELSH CORGI that has a grandsire that won best of breed years back at WESTMINSTER cost 850$ and my breed of dog was rarer than any darn tootin poodle or parson terrier.

I agree a half breed is still a half breed I think it is ridiculous to spend that kind of money for a dog that has no breeding value real breeders used to cull dogs like this !!! I have 2 dogs both are strays that I rescued ( or they rescued me depends on who you ask ) people should go rescue dogs from the shelter they are just as cute and love you just as much no matter if they were 40 dollars or 4000 in fact the strays have less health problems and are genetically superior to these inbred furballs!!!!!

I guess - different strokes for different folks. All dogs need a home but in my mind (since I have very little money as a college student) I would rather adopt a dog from a local rescue. A lot of time they are fixed, and trained and just simply could not be kept by their owners. I foster for a local rescue group and have fosters a pure bred boxer, and a pure bread greyhound. Both of which were adopted out for 55.00. I just suggest checking around and not being set on one kind of dog, you never know what dog is right for you. I did not like boxers simply because of how they looked but after fostering one, I would own one in a second!

Yes and no. I could never put a price tag on my dog. I would have easily paid $1200 for her, knowing how wonderful and perfect she is.

However, I would NEVER pay $1200 for a mutt puppy simply because it's a 'designer dog'. When I meet these people, I just shake my head at how they support the kililng of other mutts in shelters and how undereducated they are.

In short, yes, I think it's stupid.

I agree simply because they should have rescued a dog. As far as spending $1200 on a dog I see no problem with that for a purebred, especially one from a quality breeder. I will gladly spend $2000+ to get my Labrador bit ch. But I'm planning to show so that adds to the cost.

I think all those "designer dogs" are bred purely out of the greed/desire for money. Dogs that are officially recognized by the AKC have a long history of breeding as well as a long history of why (purpose = hunting, digging, protection, etc) they were bred into the purebreds they are today. These "designer dogs" were probably created by people who accidently created the combo. Since they looked cute, they had the bright idea they could profit. Which they are because demand creates the supply. Their sole purpose for existence is because they look "cute". It sickens me really.

I agree completely. These "designer dogs" aren't even real recognized breeds. They're just fancy mutts! Your neighbor could have saved the $1200 and rescued a dog in need.
