When someone passes away, email is not the appropriate communication vehicle. You should write a hand written letter or card and send to the person through the US mail.

I think sending a sympathy email is improper enough in itself. Adding an emoticon to it would be adding insult to injury. Go to your local Hallmark store and buy a card.

Personally, I don't believe that it is quite appropriate to send an e-mail, but if you insist upon it, I suggest you leave the emoticons off.

Are you kidding? Nope, I wouldn't do it. In fact, I'd at least give a phone call instead of an email.

I don't think it is, you should just state whatever sympathy you feel in words, using icons seems too casual and light-hearted
