Depends on your state. Inform your boss first. For tax information they may need a copy of your marriage license and try to figure out how many copies of your marriage license you will need.

The first answer is fairly accurate except in NC, I had to go to the same place I applied for the marriage license (at least 10 days after the event) to get a certified copy of my marriage license. It isn't sent. Then I took that over to SS Administration. Fill out that form and you have to pick if you are going to move your maiden name to your middle name or how you plan on doing it. And then you have to wait again about 10 days for SS to mail the new card to you. Then you can take that to the DMV and get your license. So it takes about a month to get a new license. Several people needed to see the cert copy but they didnt keep it so I could reuse it.

Most of your credit cards you can call and change in the meantime. They don't require a copy of your marriage certificate. Either did my insurance companies (car, health). If you have a student loan, they needed a letter stating that your name had changed but they didn't need my cert copy either. The problem occured that with identiy theft, a lot of things did not allow me to change both name and address at the same time. So I changed the address (on bills, loan paperwork, credit union) and changed the name a month later.

Then after you get Driver's License and SS card, take that and a certified copy of license to the bank. Don't forget you have 1 yr to mail your passport back in with a cert copy of license to get a new passport.

And expect that months later you will still find things that you haven't changed yet (like your registration card for your car--that automatically is sent to you so you don't even think about updating it). You don't even realize how much stuff you have--store credit cards from stores you don't go to often. My husband and I still havent changed our bank records b/c we both had nearly new books of checks that we didn't want to reorder. So I've been signing my new name on checks with my old name typed on it and haven't been questioned on it yet.

The hardest part was trying to come up with a list of everything you need to change and the week between changing license and credit cards--when you have a driver's license that doesn't match your card.
