if you're working chest, does the whole muscle get worked or just part of it depending on which exercise you're doing at that time? how can you target just the upper chest?

The chest is actually divided into two separate groups pectoralis major (the lower, larger part) and pectoralis minor (upper chest). So yes doing exercises like incline bench presses do work your upper chest and dips and such work your lower chest.

Yes it is very possible, visualize this.If you go to a gym there should be a bunch of pullie machines go to one where the pullie is taller than you stand to the side of it and take it in one hand( you will have to play with the weight till you find what is right for you)now drop to your knees so that your hand is above your head and slightly out to the side, now keeping your arm straight bring your arm down across your body to the opposite hip. Do one arm at a time while the other arm touches the upper ches to make sure you are getting a good contraction, 4 sets of 10 each side, don't go too heavy right away (20-25lbs) becouse you can hurt your shoulder, becouse of the way the muscles in the chest over lap this will tweek the upper part of the chest. Good luck.

The upper chest...as a trainer and aerobic instructor I have never really heard of the "upper chest" However, if you are trying to "build" up your "pectoralis major" otherwise called pecs....
Try these:
The old but goody push-up
Chest press with bar/weight or machine or free weights laying on a bench
Fly's (bench with dumbells or machine)

These will also target triceps, biceps, back and shoulders....but they specifically target the "chest"

If you are a male don't forget about the lower body nothing is worse than a man with chicken legs and a beefcake chest!!!!! You'll look ridiculous and completely out of whack!

Machines isolate muscles, but i recommend against it. This is because their are over 200 muscles in your upper body and if you are just isolating about 10 then its not a good work out. Use free weights and compound movements

Inclined chest press... not horizontal, not declined, but inclined, that means your head higher than your feet.
