Yesterday I found a pigeon with a broken wing in my pool (it's drained). What do I do? I'm willing to give him a week or so to try to heal, he's in a box right now on my dining room table with crackers and water. Is there any health dangers to me or my dog in keeping him around?

Birds cannot get, carry or transmit rabies! It is a mammals only disease. Please don't worry about getting a disease from your pigeon.

Wild birds can carry many parasites, none of which are a threat to you or your dog, but if you were to treat him, it would make him more comfortable and healthier. You can purchase a powder at the pet store to treat external parasites. Make sure it it is for BIRDS ONLY. You cannot safely treat a bird with dog or cat remedies, these could kill a bird.

Pigeons eat anything, so even scraps from your table will be fine (veggies). Crushed hard bolied egg is good for him too. If you feed him these foods, you don't need to worry about feeding grit as well. They really only need grit to help digest seeds.

How do you know his wing is broken? Keep in mind there could be something else wrong with him. If it's only a broken wing, he'll probably live, but once healed, he still may not be able to fly.

No! I've had a few pigeons that I rescued. They are not disease carrying monsters like most people think. Get some parakeet food for him at the store. Crackers have hardly any nutrition. Next, call animal control and ask for numbers of wildlife rehabilitators in your area and call them. If that does not work, go online and look for sites with forums for people with pet pigeons..there may be someone close willing to take the little guy.

Please do not listen to the people above saying those awful things about pigeons. They are simply not true.

i don't think he has anything contagious that can be transmitted to mammals. but he definitely needs grain instead of crackers.clean watter and a little grit(course sand) the wing will take a lot longer than a week to heal if it heals at all. this bird will in all probably never be able to fly again good luck

Pigeons are basically rats with wings - They feed on garbage and are full of diseases. It's a health risk to you and your dog. Make sure you fully sterilize anything that the bird has been near in your house.

Drop him off at the humane society, but they probably won't do anything for it either.

Birds carry diseases. Pigeons are the worst of them all. I would call animal control and notify them that you have an injured animal. I certainly wouldn't keep him in your home. Do you have a garage or a shed maybe?

Take him to a wildlife sancuary quickly so if possible they can repair the damage ,, other wise it dont look good for the bird.. and the answer is no danger.

He may carry rabies or other diseases. If you dog was to get bitten or your dog bites him your dog could get the diseases. Then maybe you god would bite you (mean, or just playing) you would now carry the diseases. Call animal control.
