I did not write ANY of these, but got them from another question found here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070213091239AAA2IsE&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMhjVWWAmBOD.1ADNRxnVZm9PwC4UU1FxWsQ--&paid=answered#NbUvWza.VTmE.VE1b7Md
All I want to know is if atheists are typically this arrogant or not? They are all suggesting it is "smart" to be an atheist. Is this the work of the organization known as the "brights?"
"Atheism is for those who believe in thinking before typing..."
"Atheism is for the rational realists."
"Atheism requires thought, not just accepting some priest/pastor telling me something."
"Atheism is for people who are tired of being harassed by bible bangers and hypocritical self-righteous cattle."
"Maybe it is for the people who actually care to use logic and common sense."
"Atheism is for those who place enough value upon themselves and other human beings to reject religious dogma, having recognized it as the huge, stinking pile of dung it is."

Here's another quote suggesting that only atheists act responsibly:
"Atheism is for critical thinking, intelligent, educated people, who take responsibility for their own actions."
What ?

You people want to give atheists sympathy for being so arrogant?
I don't believe it.

You people are giving me more reason to condemn atheists (from below):
"Christians do NOT take responsibility for their own actions. They always blame their problems or lack of progress either on Satan (The devil tempted me) or on God (he didnt answer my prayer, so he must be saying No)."
--that's a blatant overgeneralization, which is not too "bright" from a scientific perspective.

In reply to Mike K below:
Oh come now! Because religious fanatics have been derogatory to atheists is the reason that atheists should now be derogatory to anyone who believes in the existence of God? Two wrongs make a right? That's not very "bright." So much for logic and intelligence.

Atheism is fine.
But a lot have become like bible bangers, preaching their so called embrace of science, which in my opinion is more of a denial of the advancement of sceince.
Science is about answering theories, proving them right or wrong, getting the facts.
God is a theory, science is still trying to prove or deny, so far they have said with the technology he doesnt, but all the paranormal things other areas of research have discovered its still not been put to rest.
Atheism is for those who lack the ability to see beyond life itself, usually the pampered and well sheltered. Those who have seen hell in living, see that life cant be the only thing, and strive to find whats next, strive to be better, strive to attain a higher level of being, even if they dont dedicate to a set religion.
All this stuff about logic, and common sense... wouldnt it make sense, that modern science cant answer everything.
We dont have a cure for AIDS, so doest that mean we can say... The Cure is imaginary, it does not exist, or does it mean, we just havent found it yet.
The Cure has the Disease, God has Humans...
Logic, Common Sense, and realism or just blatent ignorence, arrogance, and simple minded people trying to sound intelligent?
Preachers Suck!
Even you f ' ing Atheist ones... your God isn't Real "theory" hasnt been proven yet, so dont state it as fact!

You have to recognize that atheists are the most persecuted and discriminated minority in the country. Many have to keep quiet or they'll be ostracized by their neighbors and (pretty often) their own friends and family. Atheists are the shunned members of society, the last minority group that it's ok to harass, belittle and attack.
It's only natural to become huffy and irritated by this and to feel the need to vent on the anonymous security of an online sector. Atheists (speaking in very general terms) are tired of putting up with religious crap every day, tired of having to remain quiet while their rights are encroached upon due to religious foolishness and mythological fantasy. They may be frustrated with people being too blind or adherent to ancient books to really focus on their reality. That some christians are even trying to re-write history (as Orwellian as it sounds) is another major problem.
Certainly the idiocy we see in America today - such as the fact that the Grand Canyon park officials are no longer allowed to say how old the grand canyon really is because it would offend christians, and that some people want creationism taught in schools as an "alternate theory" (it's not even close) - is just insulting.

Sure, they're typical. I don't get your point.
93% of the membership of the National Academy of Sciences deny the existence of a personal god. They ARE smart, and they are non-believers.
Studies have indicated that non-believers score consistently higher on IQ tests and SATs.
This is not to say that there are no stupifyingly dumb atheist nor genius believers. However, as a group, atheists are more likely to be more rational, better at critical analysis of data, and better generally informed.

Why? You can't handle the truth? Believing in Science before something that man wrote is bad? I will have to remember that as the computers get faster and the cell phones get smaller! If it wasn't for questioning religion and inventing things, we wouldn't be where we are today. The atheist are trying to protect science, something that religion refuses to do.

that's an oft-used saying that obtaining atheists to agree on something is like herding cats. So i do no longer think of there would desire to be considered one of those element as a common debate with one. besides the undeniable fact that, it does appear as if a fairly common trend wherein we would connect in a verbal substitute in solid faith, rapidly comprehend that our interlocutor would desire to no longer hear and could surely be fairly mad, and run for it. relating to the argument you have been having: call it what you will, censorship or something - the purpose of Yahoo solutions isn't debate yet for individuals to get solid solutions to a sort of questions. element of the device to facilitate that's the thumbs - if human beings think of your answer isn't solid sufficient, or no longer precise, they are going to thumbs-down, and in the event that they think of it extremely meritable, vote it up. a minimum of, that's what's meant to take place. while an answer will become too unpopular that's hidden to steer away from the questioner having to envision via fairly some solutions that are probably deceptive. If that's censorship, so be it. yet Yahoo isn't an completely open communicate board and is definitely entitled to attain this. Freedom of spech would not equate to freedom to assert besides the fact which you go with anyplace you go with, and Yahoo is inner maximum components whose regulations you will desire to abide via.

This is a huge bug with me.

I've seen atheists say those things, yes. But I'm an atheist and I don't say them.
Unless I'm really grumpy or feeling harassed, then I might become venemous. But Christians are every bit as guilty of arrogance as atheists. Anyone who looks down their nose at the 'lost' or 'hellbound' is every bit as bad.

You're having a laugh, right?
The question you refer to is just stupid and insulting. So guess what, some of the answers are flippant in reply. If we were earnest and serious all the time, you'd just insult us for that instead.
Keep it in context and everything makes a lot more sense.

actually it looks like no one answered your question, buddy. anyways, to answer your question, people have the right to believe in (or not believe in) anything they want. you believe in an all-powerful mythological creature (god) and i dont. its as simple as that. im not mad at you and im not trying to bash you for something you believe in, so quit trying to bash us for not believing what you do.
p.s.: real christians dont hate anyone...
p.s.s.: if you really read the bible and find its true meaning (which im almost positive you dont grasp the true meaning) its a book of stories that are guidelines and inspirations to help you live your life positively.

Um, they're typically NOT like that. People tend to see whatever it is they're looking for. If you were looking for atheists to be like that, you can find a lot of it here. If Atheists are looking for Christians who are homophobes, they can find plenty of that here too.
