I've noticed that both religious people and atheists spend a lot of time here shooting one another's beliefs down. Why? Why do any of these people care what others think? Wasn't anyone here taught by his/her parents to respect other people's beliefs? I was just wondering, because it was one of the things my mother always tried to instill in me when I was growing up.

I hear ya, Tangerine.

Yes, my mother taught me to respect others' beliefs, and she was a decent person and a Christian, for what its worth. She raise three kids to understand the meaning of love and charity.

There is more that binds us together as humans than that which divides us. Even if the two were equal, why would one want to forever dwell on the differences?

I have friends and family with a variety of philosophies and politics, but we all love each other in spite of them.

I guess you have to remember where you are - Yahoo Answers; a place where bashers are free to vent on others in anonymity. It's just a convenient place for people to fire up their flamethrowers. It's more noticeable in the Religion and Politics section (no surprise, there). Those two topics are always rife with passion - good or bad.

Unfortunately no I wasn't. My parents brought me up with the belief that christianity was the ONLY way to go. I have since shifted gears and I'm now an atheist. I do however believe in "live and let live". I couldn't care less what others believe as long as they leave it out of my life. That means public schools, laws, and government. When people from any religious belief start down that road then I get defensive.

I sure was.

I'm an atheist but I have no problem with people having different beliefs than me. I just dislike it when any one tries to force their beliefs on others. There is a way to talk about your beliefs and stay respectful to others.

This however could spring from the fact that I usually think logically. I know that everything I believe may not be correct. Even though I am atheist I still find the parallels between most major current and dead religions to be more than just a coincidence.

...But; this is just what I believe.

I agree. I think the original intent of this section was for those with sincere questions, not ones where we are shooting each other down. And another thing---why do aethists frequent this section? It is a religious section and they aren't religious . . . unless they're honestly seeking religious answers, why do they come here? That's just been something I'm wondering. I've no probelm with people being aethist, but when they come and try to ask all sorts of illogical and insincere questions, it bothers me some.
I believe it is good to discuss our beliefs and the differnces in them. It helps to confirm our convictions. But too often we forget to respectfully disagree in what we say, and end up driving people away from our ideas than towards them.

Yes, I was and I try hard to accept all people's beliefs and to not criticize or judge anyone. Unfortunately there are a lot of people here who cannot accept that there is more than one belief system and they are nasty to those who they believe are "wrong". It's a sad world we live in. Things would be much more peaceful if everyone learned tolerance and learned to love each other as Allah/God commands.

I prefer live and let die because I like the song(Paul's version). You right though. They think that they are saving by bringing you his word. He created you so you must obey. Personally, I do not need a god to feel good about myself and thus have no need to force my views on others. This will happen until the end of time whether is religion, politics, economic status, or anything. People need to criticize others to distract them for what is wrong in their lives. I can just watch Jerry Springer for that. I hate when people tell me how live.

People blast other because of misunderstand in to what they can't comprehend. I being Muslim, never have forced my thoughts or beliefs on others. I have a saying " I don't care if you convert to Islam, that's not what i want. I just want you to be informed." My mother is christian ( not devout) my grandmother is catholic (devout) and neither have pushed me to come back to believing what they believe and i don't push them to believe what i do. Actual my grandmother call the local masjid in her town all the time asking questions. I wish the world could be this was to live in that Peace. but its humans right to be right i think.

I understand what you are saying. I try to give my opinion without disregading someone else's. Some people have a problem if they believe in something so passionately when someone else suggests that they are wrong. It comes from BOTH sides, too.

I think that Pro-Choice supporters are just as zealous as Pro Life supporters.

I was brought up as a Southern Baptist. If you are Catholic, a Buddhist, whatever, then at least you believe in something. Who am I to tell you that you are wrong?

Actually, I notice that the majority of assaults on other religions come from religious people who are so filled with their own beliefs that they cannot allow another to have differing views.

Unfortunately, some people feel they have to push others down in order to raise themselves up. Arrogance is a universal problem, it seems.
