I have found that great initial customer service equals lower pay outs. Progressive is Johnny on the spot with a check that is usually a lot lower than what you would get from one of those "we'll get around to adjusting it" places.

I suspect that people in the business will pay more for good customer service -- because they know that the real rubber hits the road when you make a claim. Most other people will be most concerned with rate; I was before I got into the business of writing about insurance and saw what a problem it could be to get a claim paid. Now, I'm MUCH more concerned myself with customer service than the rate I'm paying.

I'm a claims adjuster. I pay more for customer service, and am more concerned about the rating of the company and the customer service than about the premium.

I've found that you get what you pay for. If I have a claim, I want to be able to have someone handle it. My daughter was concerned about the rates, she chose someone cheaper, and had an accident last year. She finally gave up trying to have her car fixed, and just traded it in. She lost about $3000 just because she did not feel comfortable going to a direct repair shop.

Wait a miniute here...do you honestly think that insurance companies are in business to pay claims?? Yes I would pay more for good customer service but finding that largely absent I have gone with the best premium I can find.... If you doubt that just take a look at what has happenend to the folks down in Mississippi and what they had to go through to get any money on their policies.

I would love to find a place that has both. If you're military go USAA. They have the awesome insurance with really good prices. When my car got hit in the parking lot of Winn Army Hospital, they took care of it right away even tried to give us a car to rent.

But if not, then look around for companies who have a reputation of good customer service. Price is good and all but service is what you should worry about when it comes to insurance. Progressive has nice prices, all state does too but if there was a company more like USAA for civilians I would give them a shot.

This question gets debated all over the Internet on various boards. I wish the airlines would get busy and do something about the problem. My opinion: Have a few extra-wide seats available in coach -- perhaps two of them where three seats would normally be. Change half again the price of a single seat. Place them toward the back of the plane. so that people of normal weight would not be tempted to reserve those seats just for their own comfort. If an overweight person arrives on the plane and can't fit comfortably in his or her assigned regular seat, have them move to a wide seat, requiring a normal-weight person to move out of it if necessary and billing/crediting the difference in fares. Some couples who are both overweight buy three adjoining seats, lift the armrests, and sit so they both spill over onto the middle seat. They arrange the seat belts to fit, sometimes with the aid of seat-belt extenders. If overweight passengers are going to be required to pay extra to fly, they should receive the roomier seats they need. I think it's high time the airlines implemented that, short of making them fly in expensive first class seats.

The cheapest rate in the world does you NO GOOD if your coverage is crappy and you can't get any service on it.

It's a balance, between coverage and service. Rate is the LAST thing I look at, but then, I'm in the business, so my priorities are different.

MOST consumers shop bottom line pricing - and don't even look at coverage or service.

I pay extra to go through a private insurance agent. He is great! My water pipes just broke under my washing machine. I call into his office, he calls the insurance company and they take care of the rest. Definately worth the money.

I want the most coverage & service I can get for my dollar. I'm willing to pay more than the lowest price policy to ensure that I will be taken care of when a claim occurrs.

That is what the insurance is for ..... claims.

Neither...I want the best coverage available for my $$$. For example....I don't want to worry about whether my aftermarket rims are covered or not & I don't want to worry about endorsements for them either...just cover them already.
