The world's largest desert is actually the continent of Antarctica; it is the world's driest place. It receives less than two inches of precipitation annually. Antarctica is 5,5 square miles (14,245,000 square kilometers) in area.
Outside of polar regions, Northern Africa's Sahara Desert is the world's largest desert at more than 3.5 million square miles (9 million square kilometers), which is slightly smaller that the size of the United States, the world's fourth largest country. The Sahara stretches from Mauritania to Egypt and Sudan.

The largest Desert in the World is the Sahara at 9.07 Million Square km. (41.7% of worlds desert regions). The second Largest is the Austrailian Desert at 3.37 square km's (15.5% of worlds desert regions. (ref. G.Jones et al, Collins Dictionary of Environmental science 1990).
Deserts are increasing in size due to overgrazing of neighbouring areas, deforestation and water extraction which all lead to soil erosion and encroachment of sand. Effectively this leads to displacement of populations and hunger which put pressure on other areas and natural resourses.
In the case of my Desserts they actually get smaller and vanish off my plate very quickly ;-)

A Creamsicle made in Downtown New York last year... Problem was, it melted....
Did you mean DESERT?? Id have to say Antarctica. A desert does not denote sand and sun - a desert is any place on earth that life cannot survive for long periods... The ice of the Antarctic continent is pretty much a desert of its own...

What's your definition of a desert?
Must it be land?
If just defined by rainfall, then maybe large areas of the Pacific are desert? After all most rain falls when clouds rise over mountains.
Just a thought.
