On the Betty Crocker Super Moist Cake Mix it asks for a 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Well i do not have vegetable oil, but I have vegetable shortening. If I melt the shortening to a half of a cup will that be the same as a 1/2 cup of vegetable oil? I am worried because shortening hardens back up and I do not want my cake to taste nasty do to the fact of the shortening.

If I had the money I would go buy some and would have never bothered asking this question. But seeing as how I am a college student and money is VERY tight I don't have the money to go but oil. I have shortening so I asked if it could be substituted.

The cake will not taste nasty, but it will be firmer and less moist the cooler it gets. The texture will be like a cake that's made with butter. Oil gives a cake a more delicate, moist crumb. If you are worried about flavor, you can add some vanilla or almond extract if you have it on hand, but I don't think it'll be an issue. A cake mix is a low investment of time and money; you have nothing to loose.

I will not use the shortening
I will prefer to use butter or margarine in this case even olive oil I will use before using the shortening cause I think it will make the cake dry once baked.

In cooking, the rule of thumb is to substitute one solid fat for another, and one oil for another.

So for shortening you can substitute butter, for vegetable oil you can substitute canola oil. Substituting shortening for oil will not have a positive result.

You can melt it and use 1/2 cup of the liquid shortening and your cake will be fine!

I wish you well!

NO you cannot do this.. but you can substitute applesauce if you happen to have some .. it cuts the fat/ calories and makes the cake very moist.
