We are getting married on July Fourth and we want everything red white and blue including the cake. I have a family member willing to make it for us at no charge just have to know what I want it to look like. Here is what I am thinking about- four double tiers white icing with half strawberrries standing on end all the way around bottom of each tier and finding small blue artificial flowers to put between every few stawberries. What do you all think or do you have any better ideas?

Also the family member making the cake has made many cakes. She has made three already this year and all were wonderful but she has been making the family wedding cakes for more than fifteen years. Thanks for all the advice from all!

It sounds fine, just remember you (or someone) is going to have to remove all those artificial flowers prior to serving the cake. That will be time consuming, and consider if you miss one, and then a guest accidentally eats it? I'm always wary of putting something non-edible on a cake, for that reason, unless it's those silver balls that everyone knows can't be eaten. Why not have the cake decorator just pipe flowers out of icing? That way you don't have to worry about removing something. You could also use blueberries, if you don't want that much icing. Good luck!

instead of flowers maybe you can have blue stripes running up the cake between each strawberry, this can be made easily with rolled fondant tinted blue or with just a steady hand and some blue frosting.

And as some one menitioned before make sure the family member doing the cake nows that a 4 tired cake is very difficult if not experianced, support structures have to be just right otherwise the cake will collapse and that would be a disaster.

I found a few when I searched for images. The one I listed below is pretty bold. Yours sounds much prettier! You could also do white icing and cake, strawberry filling and blue flowers on the outside. Another cake flavor would be red velvet, white icing and blue flowers. You can also decorate the cake with real flowers that are red, white and blue.
Oh and think about flowers made from icing! My cake decorator did an amazing job with the icing flowers!

That sounds quite nice. Do not use real flowers unless you are sure they are edible. People will assume they are edible because they are on the cake. You can also use blueberries. A triangular base of three with one on top in the middle will mimick the strawberry and keep the fruit theme too.

You can also make edible flowers with fondant, sugarpaste or royal icing. Check the Wilson website for info on how to do those.

If you have someone in the family who is EXPERIENCED in this type of cake (tiers, etc.) then rely on their judgement. If they are NOT experienced (and I mean VERY experinced) then I would consult a professional bakery. The wedding cake is an important part of the celebration and many people tell you they can handle this task (baking, decorating, etc.) but it takes a lot of practice and experience to make a professional-looking wedding cake. You might even be better just buying a few cakes from a bakery if worse comes to worse and you are low on funds, than relying on someone who may not be that versed in this sort of thing. Trust me, wedding cakes are NOT easy to assemble and decorate (especially when working with fresh fruits, etc.) People here have suggested fondant and other things, and trust me, those things take a great deal of experience. Do not leave this to an amateur.

I would forget the strawberries and blue flowers. I picture white icing with red and blue firework patterns all over it. Maybe add some real sparklers and light them before the cake is cut, just as some added flare!!!!!!!!

Sounds cute. Put some sparklers on top and light them just before you cut it!
By artificial flowers, I hope you mean candy flowers, right? Not plastic or silk.
