If all you need to do is get around the activation there's plenty of people sharing that hack all over the p2p networks....if it's for vista then make sure to get the readme file because it takes a few specific steps.

If you want to update windows, there's an additional hack for that as well but it keeps needing updating. There's a program release called autopatcher which is much easier and will let you install the windows updates locally from an offline zip pack. The interface works about the same, you can line item choose which updates to install and maintain rollback.

Microsoft does a "test" to see if your product is genuine. Sometimes, the test will show false positives, and/or false negatives. That is, you can buy a Genuine copy and Microsoft thinks it is fake. One reason this happens, (but not the only reason) is as suggested by another answer: You buy a "floor model" of computer from Best BUY, and someone else has copied those numbers down, loaded XP on their system before you activate your copy, so Microsoft accuses YOU of it being not genuine.
YOU MIGHT be able to call Microsoft and activate your copy of XP to make it genuine. Remember there are at least two different types of licenses Microsoft sells: Per Server or Per Seat. A per server license costs more, but can be installed legally on multiple machines. Even if you CAN NOT make your XP genuine, because of the reasons already mentioned or others, dont sweat it. Microsoft says fully one third of all computers are running on NON genuine Windows.
The best way to do it is just say no to Microsoft's crap, and install Kubuntu, which is free, instead. It is virtually virus free and costs zero, and is actually easier to use than Vista. You can get it at www.kubuntu.org

Google search for a "Crack" programme and run it I kew someome who had a demo version of XP which had "Time Expired" he ran the Crack Programme and it provide a Key Number and Authenticated the XP Programm which enabled him to get all the downloads and upgrades without a problem. As i run a genuine version of XP i cannot speak from personal experience. Alternatively pick up a genuine version of XP on E-Bay there must be loads around now Vista is out.

I know exactly how to solve this problem, my sister had it too.
Firstly, you have to go to the microsoft homepage. If you don't know it then go to google and search for it. Once you have got onto the websit go to the downloads and trials and then download centre.
Under download catergories click on "windows Security and Updates". Then click on windows update, security update and more . . . (something along the lines of that near the top of the page). Once you have done it click start now and Windows will detect whether you have a genuine windows.
If you don't there is a fee of £100.00 to make your windows genuine. If you don't have this kind of money, I really don't know.
I hope this solves your problem.

I am surprised most people aren't sneaky enough to do this, but go to Circuit City / Best Buy / Office Depot etc, copy the XP key off of any of the display units, and then go into the Windows Activation / Change Product Key and put in that new key... then activate windows and you are done.

If you buy a legal copy of XP, that would be genuine. Once you go to the Windows update page, it will confirm that and will allow you to install updates.
