This is called self-mutilation and is a sign of a bigger issue. Most people who cut do it either to dampen feelings of anguish and emotional pain or because they feel emotionally dead and it is their only way to feel, so to speak. It can be a sign of depression, bipoloar disorder, or borderline personality disorder, all of which are serious but can be treated with therapy and medication. There tends to be a progression to cutting, where at first, superficial cuts are made, but then the person gets used to that feeling and needs to cut bigger and deeper in order to get the same release of stress. Like an addiction, it is a habit that escalates with time. "Cutters" as they are called tend to withdraw from people the more intense their habits get. Honestly, from superficial cuts, the health risks are minimal, but some cutters start putting pins and needles into their skins and for this, a tetanus shot would be advised... I am not a doctor but have experience with this. It can be overcome, but focus not on that behavior but getting to the bottom of WHY she is doing it and if there is a condition that should be treated. Take her to a therapist and psychiatrist, the sooner, the better. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, I can say that I've been in your sister's shoes. Something is definitely going on with her and the cutting is usually a cry for help when she feels like she has no where else to turn. It sounds like she is dealing with some really hard stuff and that the only way that she has to cope is by taking out on her body. If you haven't already told someone that you trust, please do so. She needs professional help and she also needs to know that you, and the rest of your family, are there for her and really care about her. Please make sure that she gets help before the problem gets worse. Best of luck to you and your sister !

Yes indeed! That is something very wrong going on within her. She can die because eventually she will cut other places and if she hit a main vein.....only God will be able to save her. I think that she needs help. Something either has happened to her in the past or is happening now and this is her way of dealing with it........The only thing you can do is pray...you might cry while praying but hey sometimes it is just like that. If I were you I would cry out to God for help for your sister....I would constantly be praying...Prayer does change things. Do it sincerely..Am I saying go running through the house no..go to your room and when you are in public pray from within...You might feel like it won't happen or it won't get better but God does not fail and he hears everything.......He is the only one that can help her...drugs won't help...that makes it worse.....

i am sorry to hear this. No, she can't die from small cuts made on her legs but how long b4 the small cuts turn into big ones and how long b4 she starts to cut somewhere else? Have you tried to talk to her friends about this? She needs help and if you love your sister you will help. Sit her down and talk to her, but don't come off like you are bitching at her or she will shut down. Be her friend, be her brother, be her help.

yes she can. The problem is more deeper than you think. She needs professional help. Get your parents to do so before it becomes fatal. she is unable to express the degree of her intense emotion in words so she directs it at her self. when she does this the body automatically releases the pain killing harmones which help her to feel better but it does not last and she is harming her self at the same time. she needs to go to a therapist. Hope this helps

that depends its very possible if she cuts to deep or hits an artery. and she risk getting skin infections if she is using razors, knifes or even glass that is not sterile. Have u talked to her about getting help going to a counsler of some sort. have your family do an intervention, tell her your worried, and make her get help. there are better ways to deal with stress she just needs u to be there for her but please try not to judge her if she does talk to u about her problems. listen tell her it will be alright and help her fix it!

No but she can start a cutting habit, which is really sad and not nice to see her doing. Stop her and tell her that you are there for her to talk to.

Yes you can if the two of you still live at home with your parents or if she does tell them what is going on so that she can get help. If not then you need to help her get help and all of the family needs to support her when she gets this help.
