I think Valentine's day has become too commercialized, just like other days like Christmas, Easter, and Mother's and Father's days.. No, you don't need to buy anything special - if you're already with someone special, just do something to spend quality time together. Romance isn't about buying gifts - it's about quality time and ambiance.
