I adore her children, they're cute and everything but for the past 2 years she's been sending me pictures of her children for my birthday, x-mas, valentine's, or any kind of celebrations, as gifts. It is very thoughtful of her that's why I really don't know how to tell her that I don't want to receive those framed pictures anymore. I have those pictures digitally saved in my computer (she emailed me) but then she still buy expensive (seriously expensive) frames and put the same pictures in them and send those to me as my presents. I am a minimalist, I only hang 3 framed pictures of my own wedding throughout the condo, and I really don't want to hang pictures of whoever else on the walls. I have stacks of framed pictures of her kids in the closet. If I don't tell her to stop now, I'm sure I'm going to get some more. How do I stop her nicely, very nicely?

Tell her that the last frame she gave you is just so gorgeous, she doesn't need to send any others. You'll just swap out the picture that's in it with a new one, so that the most recent picture is displayed in your favorite frame.

start some honest grumbling about your condo
you have so many unused things that your closet does not have enough room for your clothing etc. then talk about a very short list of things you are going to give to charity. (say about four items long) the photo frames should be item three on the list
but don't mention what the photos are or who the frames came from.
do this grumbling just before an event

I imagine the chat being something like this
I had to clean the closet today just to make room for my clothes
I have a stack of things to take to goodwill a lot of old books
, some ceramic easter eggs, Can you Imagine I have over fifteen photo frames. You know I don't use them. I Always keep all my favorite photos in an album. and then i have that box of old vhs tapes just taking up space and gathering dust.

Just tell her you don't hang pictures in your condo, and that you'd rather receive the pics through email-- where you can put them in a digital photo album, and the pictures will get looked at more than the ones in frames not hung up.

Just tell her nicely that while you appreciate the gifts, the pictures she sends you via e-mail are more your style as you don't care to have many items on your walls. Suggest that she instead use the money she spends for the frames to buy food for a local soup kitchen, homeless shelter, etc. in your name.

hi

thank her a lot, and tell her you really appreciate all the bother she is going through, but it must be costing her a fortune, and you are running out of space to put all the ones she has sent you already in the one 'non minimalist' room in your house. (if you have one)

Either that, or bore her to tears back with pictures of your chap, dog, office, house, dinner, shoes, or whatever your main passion is and see how she likes it. Sorry, I know thats what we'll all love do, but don't have the bottle

Remove the pics from the frames. Put the pics in a shoe box and sell the frames.

Why do you want her to stop? Is it just because you're dreading some showdown when she discovers that you haven't dutifully hung each and every one on the wall?

If that's not going to happen, then just accept the photos and file them away. If there's a danger of it, then just rotate the photos.

Is it just yourself she sends these to? Of course you know that EVERY mother thinks her kids are the cutest, and imagines that anyone who doesn't have a photo of them is deprived in some way.

Good luck!
