Why do you confess your sins to a priest?
TRUE CHRISTIANS do NOT!
We follow the Bible-- "ONE MEDIATOR" = Jesus The Christ.
Many still confuse THE BIG CULT with Christianity!

While I believe confessing to the Priest was a form of control on the part of the church for a while I have found that confessing to another human is different than just confessing to GOD. When you confess to another person you must be prepared for the reaction you might see or otherwise experience and that may be why they put it in place. if you are ready to confess to a human than you probably are admitting to yourself that what you did, you truly believe was wrong or why else would you be confessing inthe first place. Then you can take responsibility & do something about it.

No you can not. Jesus breathed on his Apostles and said "Receive the Holy Spirit, and who's sins you shall forgive shall be forgiven" This is a special ordination. When you confess to a priest you ARE confessing to Jesus and it is really great to hear that absolution. It is a spiritual release as well. It is interesting too that when you confess your sins you receive the grace to help conquer those sins. "Where sin abounds, grace does that much more abound" The Church does also teach that one may be forgiven with just a simple act of perfect contrition if in case there is an emergency of some sort. The thing is, is perfect contrition is hard for most people to muster as it means you would rather die than commit this sin again. (he usually does not take one up on this but, you can never tell)
The Act of Contrition:
Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishment, but, mostly because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love, I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen

Because we obey scripture where it says "confess your sins one to another". Also, it makes us accountable to someone else so that we live in the light and so are not people of darkness but children of light.
James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
If you look up the word obey or obedience in the New Testament you will find that it is a characteristic of Christians. And that Jesus talks a LOT about it.
Whereas the Prideful Independence of Americans is NOT a Christian characteristic.

James 5:sixteen. might that make a difference now purely because of the fact the anticatholics got here 500 years in the past and ranting thus far. ought to I provide up listening to the ancients father who carried the apostlic messages to us or to those new minted -johnny-got here-previous due charlatans. LOL

I have no idea. I don't confess to a priest, but I guess some people do because it's a part of their faith. I guess it depends on the church's beliefs.

I do not confess my sins to a priest! Scripture says confess your faults, not sins. Churchianity is a pagan religion. Follow Scripture! The only religion that leads to Salvation is the religion that came from YHVH (and His Son the Messiah YAHOSHUA).

because the priest gives verbal confirmation of christ's mercy on his behalf.
he is not taking the place of jesus...but forgiving you in the name of jesus....making it official.
im a a catholic wo used to think it didnt matter...now the more i think about it ...the more it makes sense.
there is a certain humility you obtain when you "confess to one another".

You have no need to confess to a priest.
You have no need for communion either.
