It just has to be reasonably clean. No mold, dirty diapers, food or dirty dishes sitting out, make sure the bathroom is clean. Basically, if you would be embarassed to have them in your house, then it probably isn't clean enough. Toys are okay, they understand that children are going to play. Focus more on making sure that your house is not a health hazard and that the children's needs are being met. Make sure there is enough food in the fridge and cupboards because they do check for this. Also it is extremely important that you make sure the house is appropriately child proofed. Cover your outlets and make sure all cleaners and chemicals as well as any sharp objects like scissors or knives are safely out of reach. They check for this too. But many parents overlook it

Do any dishes, and put them away as far as possible. Clean the kitchen worktops, ensure there's no gone-off food hanging around anywhere. Clean the hob. Clean the floors, vacuum carpets. Clean the bathroom thoroughly, make sure the toilet and bath/shower are completely clean. Dust. Put things away as far as possible - obviously, things like children's toys that are in constant use are fair enough, but there shouldn't be obvious piles of junk lying around. Make sure any laundry is done, or else put away somewhere in a hamper or similar, not just lying around.
Basically, think like an elderly and particularly finnicky great-aunt is coming to visit!
Good luck.

make sure no cockroaches are visible, no mold growing in the basement, make sure there is no 100 loads of laundry laying around, dishes are done, food in the fridge, get rid of all odors, and don't forget to kick the boyfriend out of the house (if he's not soppose to be there).
i am not being sarcastic, these are some things my sister in law had to take care of when dss was investigating her. her brother had to assist her.

It has more to do with your house being clean! But, if this is all you are worried about...make sure that it is clean...not spotless...you can have stuff laying around...just not trash / food / dirty dishes...etc!
