Yep, they float. Fish will snap them up when they find them. The grasshopper will eventually get water logged and sink though. Grasshoppers can float. You can catch one and hold it underwater and let go and it will come back to the surface.
We used to use them for bait in the stock tanks and ponds when we were kids. Most of the time we just got perch, but sometimes we would get a catfish.

yes grasshoppers do float on water. i was once fishing and this one man came up to me and grab some grass from the grown then he took my hook and tied it into a grasshopper like fly, he then told me to throw it in the water and when i did i started to catch alot of large mouth bass it really works. i have use live grasshopper and it dose work.

No but there is an invisible skin on the water that lets them glide along it. You can try it with a paper clip and a beaker of water. fill the beaker to the top and gently put a paper clip on the surface. it floats!
