I work at a Ski Resort as a cleaning person...my boss is very unorganized. She never gives the schedules very far in advance...BUT, I called her yesterday asking her for my schedule for the week. She told me she would call me back and let me know...I could potentially have to work tonight at 5pm. It is now almost noon and she still hasn't called me. Would it be worng for me to tell her I can't work tonight if she asks. Should I call her and ask for my schedule before 5? I Need to know if I am being a b**ch or if she should give me more advance notice?

You are not being unreasonable at all. It depends on your position but if you have a stable part-time or full-time position I believe you are entitled to a schedule everyweek and reasonable time(8hrs?) if changes are made. You can not be held responsible for not taking a shift if you ae not given adequate notice. I would check with the local labour relations board just to be sure.

I always make sure to have my schedule out at least one week in advance. I make a bi-weekly schedule, so as soon as I post up the new schedule, I'm making the next one and will have it set aside where people can look at it.

If she's making weekly schedules, she should be posting them no later then Wednesday. For the following week. That way there's still time for changes if needed.

Typically, work schedules should be given out two weeks in advance - Example: This week and next week should be available to you. Your boss needs to get organized and stay on top of this stuff. Unfortunately, if you say anything, it will likely cost you your job.
As for today - You should call her ASAP and ask for you schedule for today. If she is unable to give it to you, tell her that you will be unable to come in tonight.

You should tell your boss you need your schedule a couple of days ahead of time so you can schedule and plan your week. Most bosses give schedules out a week before

She should give you your work schedule early. I get my schedule every Monday morning for the week! That way I'll know what i going to do for the whole week!

i think if you usually work that shift and she has been delinquent in giving you your schedule, she'll probably expect that you have it free.
if you don't normally work that shift, when she gives you your schedule on such short notice tell her you have plans already and that in the future, if she expects you to work a given night, you should at least know the day before if not sooner.
that's some crazy-boss-lady action for you.
maybe you should get her a planner? :)
