know the MPG (miles per gallon) that your car gets, find out the mileage to where it is you have to go, add about 15% to it to play it safe, also subtract about 3 mpg from whatever it says, also to play it safe. figure out how long it will take to get there and how many times in that timeframe you'll have to eat. figure out what you think your average meal will cost. have a debit card or something with like $500 or something incase you have a car problem (that is optional, but you never know). check weather to find out what kind of clothes to bring (what i mean is just check to see if you'll need a jacket). and you're good to go. it's much more simple that people make it seem. i've driven through 29 states...most of them for no reason at all, just road trips.

You have to first figure out the number of miles per gallon that you get on a full tank of gas. You need to fill up your vehicle (the closer to empty the more accurate your miles per gallon figure will be). How many miles will you be traveling from point A to your destination? Once you have these figures you divide # of gallons by miles to get the number of tanks of gas you will use.
