South Paw, Rocky Balboa put it best, I don't know the exact quote but it basically says that a lefty was fighting one night and a sports reporter noticed he was facing south and using his "South Paw," his left hand.

South paw. At 1 time, baseball fields were laid out with home plate to the west. A pitcher's left hand was therefore to the south so lefthanders got the name "southpaws" & it is now applied to all lefthanders.

This is called a "forward stance" in most styles.
Left handers normally have right foot forward.
The opposite for right handers.

Orthadox would be to stand with you left shoulder slanted toward your opponent, where you would jab with left hand and right would be your knock out punch. Southpaw would be the opposite.
