Reading through the answers, I think one person had it absolutely correct - adopt an older, calmer dog. Beagles are high exercise and Bassets are howlers. I adopted an 18 month old Pointer/Border Collie mix - she had been kept in a dog kennel for most of her 18 months and consequently became a great couch potato. She does like where we live and she does command the top of this hill, but if it's hot out, she is much more comfortable in the A/C. She was house broken, had been exposed to other pets - both dogs and cats - and has been around children, has proven to be a super dog. It wouldn't have mattered - apartment or house - but just a good long walk in the am and the pm would be sufficient.
She loves my grand-kids - whines when they come over so they pay attention to her. She returns to me by voice command even when she is out "hunting".

Most definitely not a beagle! They're very active little dogs and need a lot of exercise. While a basset doesn't need as much in the way of exercise, you're going to find that a lonely, bored basset is going to be howling all day - not likely to impress your neighbors. If you're getting a dog for a small apartment that's going to be alone all day 5 days a week, I suggest you keep on researching - and most likely a puppy of any breed would be a bad idea.

If those are your only two choices, I would go with the Basset Hound, as I've heard that Beagles are very active and need a lot of exercise. If you would be willing to consider other breeds, go to the link below and fill out the survey. It helps determine the breed that is best for you based on how you answer the questions.

I think the Basset hound would be. Beagles are social and need constant companion ship. A Basset hound is happy with a chew toy, but they both need exercise. But Beagles are more energetic but a Basset hound is perfectly happy just lying on a comfy pillow next to it's favorite person!

Have you thought about a cat? They do lots better alone during the day and can go potty in the litterbox. If you go the animal shelter and spend some time playing with the cats and talking to the workers that care for them the most, you have a better chance of getting the kind of cat you want. Example: a lap cat, a cat that likes to play, a lazy cat, etc. I definitely would not get a Beagle. They are active dogs who were bred for hunting small game like rabbits and they need lots of exercise/room to run. I would urge you to get a cat or maybe a gerbil, hamster, etc. until you can either move to a house that you can get a fenced in yard or until one of you reaches the point that you would have more time during the weekdays for the dog. GOOD LUCK!

Basset is the dog for you. They are laid back, lazy, need little room and love to sleep. A beagle is just the opposite. In fact, we own a house beagle. She is totally different from our corgis. She gets bored much faster and is demanding, noisey (beagle means 'big mouth') and needs lots of outside time to keep her happy. Beagles also tend to follow their noses and will set sail in search of something to hunt at their first opportunity. Bassets on the other hand are well suited for apartment living. Good choice.

I would say that a Beagle is a better choice, because it doesn't get very big in size and it is a very good companion. Basset Hounds grow quite big and might make the one room apartment to small for the three of you.

Oh my gosh....all i read was your heading and i had to answer this question. I live in a house, and my neighbor's have a beagle(cute little thing) i feel soo bad for that dog.! They leave it in the house all day in the sun-room when they are at work. Now when they put it outside sometimes, all it does is bark !! for HOURs . But its not the dogs fault , i think it doesn't know what to do outside, it's comfort zone is that room. Did i mention obviously they don't pay much attention to it and its only about 10 months old. But to really answer you question, both of those dog's bark and howl alot. i would not be happy to live next to u in an apartment. Have u thought about a cat? Dogs have alot of personality and i think it's really sad for them to be left home all day especially if they don't have another doggy to hangout with. Seriously they are like children. I'm a mom of two sons and i have 4 little dog's, which are like kids. they really are alot of work, as well as alot of love. please think really hard, because it really is a big commitment..... Best of luck to you.

I own a Beagle and he is really a great dog. I'm not sure if you would want one in an apartment though. He is so attached to me that when I leave he whines for about 2 hours after I leave. At night if he hears just the slightest sound he starts barking/howling. He is very active. I would say if you really want one get one because they are beatiful dogs. If you are looking at another breed take a look at a Dachshund.

why only those 2 breeds? Basset hounds get very long and big... like oversized weiner dogs =) and beagles do bark alot... they howl more than bark, but they do need alot of excersized like a yard to run in, unless you are going to take it to a dog park alot when it gets alittle older =) what about something that doesnt have an annoying bark/howl that no one else will hear when it gets lonely... are you going to crate train it? just some ideas before getting a dog for apartment living!! =) Best of luck for both of you!!!
