i am 17, when i was 11 my bro went to jail, when i was 12 my dad was threatening to kick me out of the house, and from when i was 11 to 16 my bro was in the psych ward 6 or 7 times for different reasons--most included violent behavior, cutting, or suicidal intetntions/threats. when i was 15 i was drinking ALOT at least 3 times a week, i was smoking, and i was really really depressed and i cut myself pretty much every day. and i would up being admitted to the psych ward as well because of several instances of suicidal thoughts, and intentions. when i was 16, my other brother who was 18 and severely handicaped, died. now i am 17 and my mom is in the psych ward because she checked out mentally and wanted to kill herself and was constantly making comments about suicide.
i don't have any friends, because i feel like the people my age don't really understand me, and i have nothing in common with them. all the teenagers talk about is boys and boys and boys. and while physically, yes, i AM

17 years old, I feel like I have had a lot more experiences than them, which has made me feel older and act older. Coz face it, I was forced to grow up at age 11. So I have nothing in common with the kids my age, but yet I am not out of school so anyone older than me really won’t talk to me either.
So I am kind of stuck.
And it has been that way since I was 11.
What should I do? Should I face the fact that I really can’t change the fact that my life is screwed up, and that for at least another year I am not going to have any friends?
I don’t really talk to anybody about anything, I just go about my day, I go to work, put on a smile, come home, act happy, then when I get tired I climb in bed and cry.
There has got to be a better way than this, hasn’t there?

Yes..there is much more. It is just that you have not had the chance to see the better side. You are right, you have had to grow up fast. But it is time to start to grow up happy...you can do it. Get to a counselor. Therapy does not have to be the psych ward. A good therapist is like a really good friend. You can talk to them you have many issues to deal with, and they can help put you on the right path. It sounds like you have not had to many people you can depend on in your life. Find one and go from there. Also you can look for support groups in your area. Survivors of family violence, etc. There are options. You are an amazing person to hold it together this long....do not give up now.

Yes there is a better way. Depression is treatable so see a doctor and get your depression treated so you can get on with your life. Consider joining a club or group so you get out a bit and if you haven't consider going to a friendly church once in a while why not try a couple churches out even if you are not a real stong believer. You may find that it helps in one way or another and it is a place where you can go and ease your mind. Do you have a relative nearby that would let you spend time at their house for a while each week? The key is to find some place or something to do for a while to just help you take your mind off of things where you are away from all of the problems at home. Do get your probable depression treated though.

Checking your self into a psyche ward may be very frightening. Instead of that, why not try talking to a counselor. If you are still in school they should have a psychiatrist and counselor that you could talk to. They may also have resources of counselors that you can talk to outside of school. I also found that making friends outside of highschool is much easier, people are more mature.

Except for your family's problems, every teenager has thoughts like you. We all have been through them, but most of us don't act out on them (like drinking, smoking pot and cutting).

You are crying out for help, so get some. Talk to an adult you trust (maybe an aunt, uncle, guidance counselor) and they WILL help you.
