but then again her dad won't let here date yet becasue he liked her old boyfriend. is boyfriend and girlfriend the same thing as going out.

Going out can technically mean going out, like to a movie or something. Her dad is gonna like and not like the guys that she goes out with, I can understand not wanting to just flat out ignore what her dad said, so instead go to her house and try to get to know her dad, at the end of the conversation with him ask his permission to date his daughter, he will respect your courage to be a true gentlemen and ask permission first. I think things will work out between you guys. Good luck
