It is yours to keep. An unsolicited gift comes with no strings. If the giver tries to add strings to it, kick his can to the curb.

Well.. you get gifts during christmas, birthdays, and baby-showers, and wedding gifts... do they have to be romantically involved with you to give you these gifts? Do you give it back if they're not romantically involved with you?
Getting a valentine's present just shows that the person appreciates you. All you have to say is 'Thank you.'. And say "Happy Valentine's Day!".
Personally, I used to give gifts (nothing expensive) to women I am not romantically involved in, and I expect nothing in return - just a 'Thank you', and 'Happy Valentine's Day', or just a smile should suffice. Really - it's not a big deal, so don't make it a big deal.

If you have to give something back is is bartering rather than a gift. Unless the gift is inappropriate (lingerie, for example) keep it and say "Thank You." If the gift is too personal, give it back, tell the person the gift was too personal, and that he should give it to a girlfriend.

You should only give something in return if you feel the same way romantically with them, otherwise dont get anything.
If you still feel bad, just give them a card or something that emphasizes how you feel, like "Your a great friend! happy V-day"

You know, it can just be a normal gift, it doesnt have to be a Valentines day gift, just a normal gift.

No way! If someone gives you a gift, then that is exactly what it is, a gift. You tell them thanks and tell them you appreicate what they have done.
