can i plug in my ipod directly through aux in. ?

Yes you can and also any kind of MP3, CD, Minidisk, DAT, or Cassette players provided they have a phones or line output. You will need to get a special cable for this (one with a headphone jack at both sides)

The front aux input should be a 1/8" audio jack. It's the same size/style connection as the headphone output on your iPod. So yes, you can connect your iPod to your head unit through the aux input.

However, there are also many head units that will allow you (often with a separate adapter) to hook up your iPod through its dock connector. Then, you can control your iPod with the head unit, and usually it will charge your iPod as well.

You should be able to do that with the proper cable. My 2004 Nissan Sentra included that option and we can use it with my wife's Palm Tungsten IIe and my son's iPod Shuffle.

You can use ipod only if the device is compatible for it, or generally it is used for headphones, and or for amplifiers etc
