I am going to be having a birthday party for my great dane in a couple of weeks. We are going to be having about 8-10 of his closest canine friends in attendance. I was wondering if you had any suggestions as to any games that could be played (with the idea that the "winner" gets a prize) making there be interaction with the dog and its owner.

So far I have the owner that can get its dog to kiss them the longest; best trick; and longest stay while a treat is nearby. Whoever wins is going to get a prize for their "person". Any ideas that you have outside of what I have already thought of would be wonderful!! Thanks :-)

The party is going to be held indoors as it is in March on the east coast. Therefore an agility course - or any simulated outdoor activities - would be quite difficult.

FUN!! I love doggie parties, great socailization. Games we've done in the past:
Get a bucket have the dog sit next to it and his person stand about 5 feet away. The person tosses tennis balls into the bucket, whoever gets the most in wins (the dogs usually try to grab them).
Doggie push ups- how many sit/ downs can each dog do in one minute. This one is a great group activity, everyone can do it at once.
Set up some kind of obstacle course, you can have prizes for fastest, most accurate and most creative.
Have a great day!!

I've never gone to a doggie birthday party that had games before. They usually have some agility equipment out (it's always been hosted by a resort or something) and the dogs and owners played on the equipment etc.

You could do something like that. Set up something like a mock course and have the owner and dog run it the fastest. Just some chairs w/ a pole between it, something you can make into a tunnel, maybe some kind of balance plank, etc.

Good Luck

On my papillons first birthday party we invited his 12 closest friends over! The first activity we did was swimming (only if you have a swimming pool and its hot where you are at)... then after that we had each do and its owner put their dog on a leash and then we put a doggy pizza (from a local dog bakery) and we counted to three and then let go of the leashes and whatever dog got to the pizza first got the prize haahha (but of course all of the dogs fought for it haha) and then of course we let all of the other dogs get a piece afterwords.....another activity we tried was that was to see which dog looked the best after all dressed up! haha and my dog won because we have so many outfits for him haha...... and then finally we just let the dogs hangout inside and in the backyard, pool, etc. Ohhh yea we also had to see which dog knew the most tricks and the winner would get a nice juicy raw hide stick (of course my dog was jeolous of the adorable chihuahua haha) well there are some great ideas for a doggy birthday party and i know you will have a blast doing one!!!!

Socializing with other dogs they like is about the most fun "social" activity you can do with your dog. Some fun games you can try are "Find the treat in the balls", where you have a basin tub or kiddie pool filled with plastic balls, and treats are in the bottom of the pool. We give our dogs barkday cake from our bakery, which is always fun. Just remember to keep the food portions small, and make sure everyone has some, and the bowls are not too close to one another. Large portions can make a dog protective. Lots of toys to play with, (at least one for everyone) is about as coordinated as you can get. Maybe one of those giant inflatable balls from walmart. Anything else will be more for people, such as dog-owner look-alike contests, costume contests, etc.

Jeez, Nick, don't you have a pet? You must not, or you would understand how people feel about theirs.

If you would be interested in something that isn't a quickie contest, there is a board game called My Dog Can Do That! There are cards (categorized by difficulty) that give instructions for what the dogs have to do. Points are awarded when the team does it correctly. ebay actually has a couple for sale right now.

I think it's a wonderful idea. Not everyone has kids and some people's dogs are their kids; in response to the ignorant person above. Sorry, I don't have an idea but just got angry with that response. I will have a second bday party for my 2 Dobies!!!
