My son is 2 (28 mos.). He has known all his letters for a while now. He can identify them easily. For example, if you print the letter M he will tell you it's an M and "M says mmmm." He also identifies all numbers with ease. He's known his colors and shapes since he was 12 months. What should he be working on now? I don't want him to be bored with the same old things. Is it too early to try to teach him to print his letters? What about reading short words? Lately he's not very interested in books. He's on a kick now where he wants us to make up stories and TELL him stories instead. The other thing is that he's obsessed with sports. He sleeps with his football and basketball every night and loves to throw and dribble.

Tha't good he knows so much already! Please, give him a break and let him enjoy being a kid. To keep him from being bored? Take him to the zoo, the park, stuff like that. When you go for a walk, point out flowers (if you know what they are-tell him the kind they are). He is too young to start him learning how to read. So, now he sounds like what he wants is for mom and dad to show how much of an imagination (good for creativity) like he has (but his is better-he is a child). He is two years old-please, let him enjoy being 2 yrs. old. School will seem long enough to him. And, yes, you are doing a good job, just relax a bit. The school dist. won't let him start till he is of legal age to start. Sports is good-it gives him a good bit of physical exercise (again, please don't overdo). And, it's something for he and dad to enjoy together (if mom like sports too, good). He probably has a good vocabulary for his age. So, please, mom and dad, relax, enjoy his childhood, they grow so quickly! Take care.

Seems like your boy is on fast track and prefer more lively learning. Perhaps you can try to expose him to more knowledge by various topics. ie. (1) transport - bus, taxi, car, lorry (2) things in a house (3) name of animals. Let him know that everything that he see had a proper name and encourage him to ask you by pointing to the object. Of course, you have to tell him instantly what it is before his attention is moved away.

Can identify numbering does not mean understand the meaning of these numbering. If he understand what these number stand for, then you can train him on simple calculation starting from 1+1. If not, you have to teach him what these numbering stand for (before moving on to calculation).

Hope these will help your kid in the next stage.

your son will just learn on his own.....my son was 2 and knew all of his colors in english and spanish, just by watching Dora the Explorer...he knows how to count to 20 on his own, and when we are in the grocery store he will spell out Milk, Dairy, Meats- it's amazing how much their little brains can handle!!! now he is3 and knows all the Dinosaurs by name! Words that I don't even know....and if he asks me the name and i get it wrong he will correct me right away.....he is soooo smart. so just work with him on shapes- reference a circle to the sun or moon, square to a piece of cheese, like that! well good luck! enjoy

Teaching them that young they can forget and have to re-learn it. Don't push the reading. If he wants you to tell him stories, then do that.

Let him learn by playing. There's so much for them to learn that way.

Here's a great article:
