If so, then why wouldn't it be possible for it to have evolved with a little hlep from God? You know, like a mutation here and a mutation there?

I once lived with many evolutionary biologists at a field station, and there were Christians among them who had no problem reconciling evolution with their personal beliefs.

For the record, I believe that the eye evolved on its own.

Why do some people have such a hard time answering a question without making baseless assumptions about the person who authored the question?

I believe in God, and while I wouldn't necessarily argue against the idea of a gentle nudge here and there (which I don't believe in), I do believe it is entirely possible that the eye evolved on its own.

The key is not why they do or don't, it is how they understand.
This is the key! Understanding!

I personally do not understand many things. However I may lean towards my own understanding, which can lead me to a form of ignorance. It also can lead me towards a form of Logic or Intelligence or Rationality, etc., etc., etc..

Does this understanding I have help me to help others. Maybe! Maybe not! But what it is, is my own understanding.

Now if I step outside of my own understanding and look towards another's understanding, will this enable me or disable me. For some the answer is yes! For others the answer is no!
Why?
If my answer was no, it is because I prefer my own understanding as the only way.
If my answer is yes, it is because I realized that my way is not the absolute way.

Does this make me stronger or weaker. For some it is a weakness, for others it is a strength.

The key to this whole issue is Understanding!

Many people believe in "intelligent design". I do not. I believe in evolution all the way, and to answer your question; No. Its no more complex than a camera! Im a med student, and as you study the anatomy and physiology of the human body, it becomes so clear. While the structure of the eye may amaze you, when you understand its complexities, its ironically simple. Fascinating, but simple, and absolutely evolutional.

To paraphrase "The Selfish Gene" by Richard "Going to Hell in a Handbasket" Dawkins: A few million years is plenty of time for insects to evolve a good camera eye.

Spot on.

Take a look at a horseshoe crab. Their eyes have been studied to help explain how the eye originally evolved. They say it started as a light sensor so ocean creatures could tell their distance from the surface by the amount of light.

Don't bother. I too attempt to hold the "open minded atheist" approach and try to mediate and talk with the intelligent and open minded religious folks- who are very cordial and very easy to get along with. Those who wish to deny evolution will try anything to get their own point across and run down anyone talking about anything that opposes them. You could say that Adam and Eve were actually named Allen and Jasmine and you would be labeled a heathen and told you are going to hell... I simply do not understand extremism.

No, I don't think that the eye is that complex or that it required the hand of God to help it evolve. The human brain on the other hand and its conciousness and self-awareness is another thing.

There is all kinds of things in nature that would imply that the hand of a Maker is at work and that mere happenstance could have done all this.

If you want to believe that nature is just another word for "God", that works as well.

What evidence do you have that the eye evolved 'with a little help from God?'

2007-02-13 11:18:51 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

I believe that the eye is too complex to have evolved on its own.
I believe that eye needed a lot of help, it could have survived by itsef in a lonely world.

And when it would have been joining to created human body? ; )
