Every situation is an opportunity to exercise and affirm free will. It all depends on the choice you take. We call any sharp and uncomfortable sensation pain just as all negative and unwholesome actions causing grief are attributed to the devil, Satan or evil being. Where your heart is your treasure lays.

Satan will do anything and everything a person will allow him to get away with.
Satan only bothers those who have a relationship with God, though, or who are intended to - the ones who say there isn't a God, satan doesn't have any need to bother with. He already has them, anyway.
