My front door opens up to a 6 foot wide hallway that leads to my dine-in kitchen. The hallway is about 15 feet long with stairs on the right beggining after the doorway to the living room. To the left, I have an area that is about 7 x 8 with a closet. I have a mirror and table there but it looks empty and the hallway is large and also empty. I think less is "more" most of the time but I can hear an echo in here!

my family and i have a family walk in with pictures of us
maybe decorate it with a style that's different from the entire house
if other rooms are brighter, make it a dark maroon with an old antique dresser or something that brings it all together
decorating is fun, don't make it a hassel :)

Looks as though you have two problems- the room looks empty because nothing is keeping your eye in the room, and secondly the echo. If you paint/wall paper stripes that run vertically in the hall, this will help. Put a nice clock on the wall and get 2 or 3 smaller mirrors and put them above the table- rather than one mirror. Add some type of rug/ floor cloth to cut down on the echo. Is the stairway carpeted? If not- paint the boards facing you (not the runners) the same color as the trim in the hallway. This will visually break up the room.

A few suggestions might be to put a coat rack type of furniture piece by the door, maybe a few pictures on the wall, but do not over do it. an small area rug might warm the place up, and I'm not sure what color your walls are, but if they are a pale color, you may want to consider changing to a bolder color. Maybe a bench in there might be nice.

think of a simple design you like and paint/stencil it up along the wall. (like a wave of something.. or even just a set strip around head height and another near the bottom to even it out )could always paint it then sponge a slightly lighter colour, or the other way round, lighter base and slightly darker colour depending on how you want it to look, you dont want to over crowd.. or do you.
What is the floor like? carpet or wood, or? Have you tried a hallway rug.
You could hang things on the doors...

Is there carpeting in the area? If not an area rug may help.
