my own 2 dogs...Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They never ever ever bark unless there is a reason to, but they may growl at strangers. Ridgebacks are loyal, intelligent, gentle, and very independent. Great dog for guard dog duty, and some in other countries they accept the breed as a herding breed. They do not make a good first dog, though the same traits that make them difficult often appeal to the more experienced owners. (like me) :D Their short, easy to groom coat was my biggest ideal choice, only needing a brush (with a rubber "hound" glove or the "Zoom Groom" by Kong (my favorite) once a week to slow down (and nearly stop to my suprised observation) the shedding! If you hate vaccuming dog hair in your house then this breed is for you! -wink wink- ;) This is a great breed for people whom have pet dander and or allergies. My husband has allergies and he never sneezes around them. Bathing is a snap, only needing it once a month unless they get really stinky or dirty (i.e. at the dog park, chasing your neighboors cat down the street in the rain, ect.), and I recommend you use something mild since they have such short, and sensitive skin. Even if you have already bathed them that week then you can use puppy shampoo. Its mild, and usaully cleans very good. After all it is made for very stinky and dirty puppies! Also use a coat conditioner once in a while on these guys, because dandruff is not fun on these dogs...believe me it can snow in the summer, lol! :D Many breeds also contributed to their hertiage: the greyhound, for speed; the bulldog for biting and holding ability; the collie, for slashing ability; the pointer; and Airedale and Irish terriers, for coat color and scrappiness. It is likely that the Great Dane, mastiff, bloodhound and deerhound also contributed to the gene pool along the way. Hows that for a true mutt? Its regonized as a purebreed but in reality it is a mutt. A relatively new breed, it is only about 100 years old. I posted some links below for your curiosity. Enjoy the info! :)

I'll tell you my favorite kind of dog, but if you are looking for a dog, look for a breed that fits your needs, your habits, lifestyle and temperament.

The Boston Terrier is a wonderful dog. They generally have a very cheerful disposition, they are easy to care for. They are usually only about 25 pounds but they are very strong. They scare people by their looks, but they are the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. They are short haired so they require very little grooming/expense. Some of them can be a little obstinate, but it's kind of cute.

Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) are very smart and alert dogs.
If you want a dog that will tell you anytime someone comes by the house or someone has just pulled up in the driveway, this is your dog. They are also about 25 pounds but they have a lot of fur and it requires a lot of grooming and maintenance. They are easy to train, but they do tend to bark a lot. I have one now and he is very loyal, sweet, and loving but the barking can really get on my nerves sometimes.

Back to what your needs are, the American Kennel Club website has great tools for picking the right kind of dog for you:

It's important to think of adopting a dog as adding another member to your family, and it shouldn't be taken lightly. Veterinary expense can be about $400-600 a year.

All of the ones that I have been blessed to have in my life over the years. At one time or another I have had - Border Collie, Std Poodle, Min Poodle, Cockapoo, Collie mixes, Rottie mixes, Old English Sheepdog, Smooth Fox Terrier, Terrier mixes, Hound mixes, Lab, Doberman mix.......They have all been different in personalities and temperments, but have all been absolutely wonderful housepets, great with children of all ages and other animals. I have had purebreds as well as mutts, and each and every one of them hold a special place in my heart. I would never refuse a dog a home because of or lack of a traceable predigree.

Chihuahuas. They are sweet, loyal little things. I also wanted a small dog that liked to walk, but not long distances. Once or twice a day around the block a few times with little lawn trips in between and they're happy. Plus I wanted something i could dress up and carry around with ease. To say the least, my Chihuahua is a spoiled princess.

I like dobermans. I wanted a dog that wanted to always be with me, enjoyed exercise and being outside a lot and didn't require much in the way of grooming. So I bought a dobie and have been quite happy.

I like large short haired breeds, usually with a smushy face. My favorite is an American Pit Bull Terrier, but I also love American Bulldogs, Boxers, Rottweilers, Bull Terriers, and Mastiffs.

I simply WORSHIP all animals! The dog I think we would probably include next in our all-cat family would probably be a lovely little shelter pup...or any little guy/girl who needs us. We tend to be a family whom the strays seek out. We have food bowls, water and shelters all around the outside of our house. We have already taken in all 6 of these lovely cat ladies and gentlemen for years now...they were all ferals.

If a little pup or dog guy or gal comes to us for a home...it's his/hers! We love them all. There are 3 big canine fellows who run in the neighborhood pack whom we feed...a lovely Rottweiler gent, a German shepherd girl and a lovely Heinz 56 boy. They sleep under the cars across the street for now...but who knows? Main thing...if we can help with our love and giving...we will give it to any and all animals.

Adopt from your shelter, folks...these precious girls and guys are counting on you. They only want to give you love and many years of their wonderful lives. Are you looking for the loves of your life...adopt from the shelter or domesticate that little feral that hangs out by your door. Your love and patience will be rewarded richly!

My own dog--a collie-golden retriever mix is my favorite mix of dogs. I love mixed breeds which are actually mutts, I do not like purebreed dogs at all.
