I would say a short buzz cut.

If he is a boy , boy meaning he doesn't mind the style of his hair get it all cut off in summer, that way he has less to wash, comb, and it is very cool literally in the summer. If he is concious of style and wants to make the decision, let him. It doesn't matter what it is he will have to live with it and it will always need to be trimmed and washed, ask him what he wants. ummmm it depends on the type of hair. But for that age keeping it as short [without completely cutting it all off] is best! Because there's not too much worry about him messing it up.

yep, shave it off, start off longer then work way shorter until kid is happy then you'll know which number to do it next time.. when is gets long he can spike it and then take it from there.
