They don't.
I could get totally psychological and say that combatting forces attacking you spiritually is all in your mind, but I'm sure you will not accept that as an answer if you are a highly spiritual person. So, I will say, theologically, that God has no need to test the atheist, because the atheist already doesn't believe in God.

Lets define spirituality: It is the embrace of the virtues, for instance, love, charity, fidelity, justice, peace, and the rest. What would spiritual combat be? Would it be like Aikido where you try your best to take the attackers energy to ground or would it be more like the slapstick of the three Stooges.

In the movie Hero, Jet Li's character, "Nameless", has spiritual combat with another character, "Broken Sword", on a lake. Jet Li is an atheist.

I'm free to objectively explore all aspects of philosophy, theology and spirituality and I do. I haven't yet came across spiritual combat.

When people say "spiritual," it usually turns out that they mean "emotional." I deal with emotional problems by doing my best to separate myself from my emotions so I can think more logically. Generally, I end up feeling silly for letting my emotions get the best of me in the first place.
