I've got this weird lump in my throat, it feels like I have to burp, but I don't really have to. but when I do burp, it relieves it for a minute and then goes back. Its not painful or anything, it's just really uncomfortable. Its like I've got this knot in my esophagus or something, or like a weird muscle contracting down there. I didn't do anything to strain it, or anything. It usually happens at night and happens like once a year.

Any chance it has to do with stress? Stress does crazy things to the body. You may be tightening the muscles in your throat without knowing it. If things have been stressful in your life lately, that could be the cause. Best thing would be to learn some relaxation exercises or work out the stress with some exercise.

Also, it could be the time of year. If it's cold where you live you may be tensing your neck/throat muscles against the wind. You know how people hunch their shoulders and pull their chin down to keep the cold air from getting in their coat? You might be doing that and straining something. The dry air in homes this time of year might be effecting the way you breathe as well.

Other causes could be related to the way you sit while at work, watching TV or reading a book. Or it could be the flu or a cold coming on. Often I notice an unusual pain or discomfort somewhere in my body before I get the usual symptoms of a cold. I think it's the virus lodging in some tissue and the body trying to fight fight it off. Don't know if that's really how viruses work, but that's how I picture it.

Anyway, if you can figure out what might be triggering your throat issue, you might be able treat it or change your behavior to avoid it.

Hope it goes away soon and for good!

How old are you - this is not a trick question is it? I love being playful but on the other hand we need to figure this out. I used to have weird feelings in my esophagus and they were like icicles.
So that's what I called them. Later I figured it was a young form of heartburn. On the far side people have thyroid cancer from the throat area. In any case do not ever think its too soon to ask a physician. i do not wait too long when I have a symptom before going to see my family doctor. If this continues through the weekend get off to see him.

It could be gas, try taking some pepdobismal or something similar. Sometimes the acid from your stomach gets in your throat.

I had the same thing happen to me and its all about stress. When was the last time you had a good cry or a stiff drink? You just need to relax.
