My son had problems with me consuming dairy starting at birth (I was breastfeeding). I started eating dairy products in small quantities when he was 6 months old and he had no reactions. At 14 1/2 months old I wanted to wean him from breastfeeding so the doctor gave the okay to try cows milk. He seemed to have no problems with it. So I had been completely done weaning for 2 weeks and he got extremely constipated until I started giving him flax oil every day on top of the ground flax seeds I had already been using. He had also been sleeping poorly starting at 6 months but the doctor chalked it up to being teething. So for the past 5 days now I haven't given him any cows milk and he is waking up once at night. Prior to not giving him cows milk he was getting up 4, 5, 6 times. He still eats plenty of yogurt and cheese. I have been debating giving him soy milk but then I was reading about the effects of too much estrogen on little bodies. What do you think?

I believe flax is beneficial anyways so I won't stop using it. He was only using the flax oil AND flax seeds while he was constipated. And trust me....he was REALLY constiapted. Now he just gets 1 tsp. ground flax seeds in his food.

I am trusting my instinct that his sleep issues are caused by the milk.

Go with the soy. when my daughter was born she would get bound up from the reg. formula, the pediatrician said to put Karo syrup in her bottle. Well that's a high sugar content, so I switched her to soy and the problem was gone. The NEW pediatrician said I did the right thing.
There is always talking over the risk with your child's doctor, and if you are not satisfied get another opinion.

Back off the flax seed stuff (unless your doctor told you to use it) and just give him small amounts of 2% milk along with his yogurt and cheeses. Make sure he gets a good balanced diet and plenty of fresh fruit & veggies. Add and take away things one at a time for about a week then add something else to his diet see how he does for a week before adding again. Take it slow and don't stress on it. It is not unusual for a toddler to go a day or two without pooping....as their diet changes. I would stay away from the soy milk as it is very costly and your son tolerates yogurt & cheese which are made from milk. At his age he should not be waking at all at night....it could just be habit at this point and not a dietary problem at all. Good luck.

My daughter has been on soy milk since she was eighteen months due to a milk allergy that she still, eight years later, did not outgrow. I have researched the benefits of soy and it is well known that a diet high in soy is actually good for people's hearts, and reduces the risk of cancer as well. I think that it is okay to give him soy. There are so many different brands though. If you decide to give it to him be sure that it is a fortified one that has atleast 25% the daily reccommendation of calcium. Silk Enriched Soy Milk, Silk Very Vanilla, and WestSoy Fortified are the best. My daughter likes the Chocolate Silk the best.

I worked in a daycare last year where a child had a dairy allergy. So the parents gave the child soy milk. He liked it, however he never had a solid poop. It was very loose and smelled awful, therefore he would get bad diaperrashes. Have you tried a lactose free milk first?

my son is lactose intolerant and my pediatrician told me to put him on soy milk. I see no difference in him then any of his other friends that are on regular milk. Lactose is a common allergy and many kids have the same problem.
