Is it true if one takes guardianship (not foster parent) over their nephew that the state will pay them a monthly amount to take care of the child? My sister-in-law was appointed guardian for her nephew and because they can't find the real mother to pay support for him, she thinks the state is going to pay $400/ month to her in leiu of parental support. We are in Michigan. Is this true?

Not so here in Phoenix Arizona. I had Guardianship of four of my grandchildren for six months, never seen a dime from the State. The kids got clothing money but it took 51/2 months and a lot of nagging from me. They told me to go to Foster care classes then I would get a monthly check. The classes took six months, by then the kids were back with their father. It's a no win situation except that the kids are not in group homes and in our loving arms.

Guardianship and custody are not the same thing. If you only have guardianship then that just gives you the right to sign her up for school and medical treatment but you are not the custodial parent in the eyes of the law. If he is not legally responsible for that child then he will not be legally ordered to pay for that child. But since you are a housewife it would be completely acceptable for you to get hundreds if not over a thousand in alimony which should help you support the child. Have you thought of asking the parents of the child fro some support?
