definitely need to see a vet, but does the bird ever walk on the carpeting? sometimes, a minute strand of carpet fiber can wrap around a toe or the ankle and cut off circulation. this also happens with reptiles. if around a toe, it can actually cause it to fall off. if you can't see anything around the birds ankles, than either the swelling is hiding the fiber or this isn't the problem. does the bird pick at the feet or ankles, as if it's irritated by something there? if you can handle the bird, take a close look, but even if this is the problem, it sounds like it's gone too far to be taken care of at home. did she ever use the perch since you've had her? how long have you had her and do you know how old she is? did you get her from a reputable pet store/breeder? if the poor little thing keels over on you, make sure you know why before you get another one, so you don't have the same problem again. the questions i've posed here are good guidlines to use when looking for a bird of any type, from finches right up to macaws. these are things a vet will want to know also. birds can be hard to take care of, but if you do your homework, they are one of the most loving and smartest pets you could have. if you have trouble finding a vet (or an AFFORDABLE vet), check with your local humane society. in some places, the cost of treatment thru them is less than if you went with someone in private practice, so to speak.

If it is that bad you probably need to take it to the vet. I just got a lovebird from a rescue shelter who had a cut on his foot, and the shelter told me to take a Vitamin E capsules and poke it with a pin and put it on the foot. Also, find some sort of supplement (that is safe for birds to eat-not the capsules) and put it in the food with Vitamin E.
It is never a good sign when a bird does not perch so this is more serious so i do recommend a vet before it gets too out of control.
Good Luck. Hope your bird gets well soon. Give it lots of love.

Sounds like she needs to be seen by a vet. Staying at the bottom of the cage is not a good sign. If the vet does say all it is is a foot issue though, you can try to the cotton rope perches. My guys each have a couple in the cage and they love to sleep on them - guess it must be cozier! Good luck and I hope your baby is ok.

swollen feet can aften be an indication of an underlying heart condition or viral/bacterial infection. It is not uncommon in lovebirds. I work at a petstore and we had a black masked lovebird with swollen feet. She was taken to the Avain Vet and found to need medication and a lot of love. After a lot of therapy she was alright to be adopted out to a man with a lot of experience with lovebirds. It's been three years and she's still alive today, but she has needed medical attention since then. Take your bird to the vet immediatly. If it is a condition similar to the one I'm thinking of, she can develop blood clots that can become loose and cause a heart attack or stroke.
Look in the yellow pages for an AVIAN vet. They need to be avian certified to be qualified to properly doagnose and treat your bird. Take her ASAP
