Bring a CD player with your favorite music. Most dentists don't mind! Turn it up loud and think pleasant thoughts! I've had five root canals and I have never found them to be a whole lot worse than a filling. They just take longer. If your dentist feels you may experience a lot of discomfort, he or she will order a pain med. Just relax Sweets! They are necessary and you won't even think about his 2 weeks from now! Be calm! Tell them your anxious and ask for N20 before they start anything. You'll be fine, a root canal isn't painful no matter what you've heard. Most of those people had a horrible abscess causing them excruciating pain before they had the root canal. It was the tooth ache that caused the pain, not the root canal. You may be a little sore after wards so get the pain med's filled and take one before the anesthetic wears off, then you can tell if you'll need more as the feeling come back in. Trust me on this, I've had one myself and gone over this with patients thousands (or more) of times. You'll be fine! Let us know how it went when you get done today and good luck.

My dentist has a numbing medicine that he applies before he uses the needles. It helps alot. I had my wisdom tooth pulled out a week ago & had to have several shots, but it wasn't so bad because of the numbing medicine. Ask for it when you go. I would also bring a MP3 player or walkman with your favorite music that will help to keep your mind off of what is going on. It will be alright.

My dentist numbs the area first with a gel so you don't even feel the needle. I used to be scared too but it wasn't that bad. Also if you are really scared talk to your dentist or dental assistant when you get there. Maybe they can give you something to make you less nervous. Be sure you have someone to accompany you though or they won't do it. Good luck.

Just remember that the little pain of the needle is your friend.
Your friend helps you escape the really big pain of a root canal.
Think of the pain as something else. Think of it as extreme cold, like biting into really cold ice cream, instead of as a needle.
Closing your eyes may help.

My dentist let me have head phones on so I could listen to the radio, and the sounds would be muffled. Plus I took Valium and other meds before he started, plus he gave me gas and Novocaine
Good Luck,
after it's OK not much pain

Ask for gas. Most dentists will offer laughing gas at no charge. It will help relax you, and it has no side effects.
