Actually, this is essentially the position of both Brahmanic Hinduism and Gnosticism. Since Hindu sources will be easier to find if you desire additional research, I'll frame my answer using Hindu terminology.
"Brahman" is sometimes translated as the "oversoul." Brahman contains infinite possibility; everything that is, was, will be, and couldn't be. One type of thing which exists with Brahman is desire (not necessarily sexual in nature; the desire for anything). It is the nature of desire to seek fulfillment, but fulfillment is impossible within the undifferentiated everything of Brahman. Therefore, Maya ("Illusion") arises--in this case, the illusion of the universe. Each desire can manifest itself within Maya and seek fulfillment. These manifested desires are called "Atman" (or "souls").
So, in the Hindu tradition, although each of us believes ourselves to be a separate, objective consciousness acting within a physical universe, we are really just aspects of the same greater whole, having forgotten what we truly are and become lost in illusion.

It is about as close to spirituality as I get, actually. J. Michael Strazinsky elaborated on this theory in his fictional work on the series Babylon 5.

No, that's dumb.

There's no such thing as a soul, anyway.

Are you willing to accept the possibility that there is no 'real' reason for being?
