I have a tiny little poodle girl. She is my baby. I treat her like one and talk to her like one. She likes to be carried like a baby.

Of course, it is a shame that they cannot understand our words and we can't understand their barks, but they do understand the tone of what is said and with what gestures and body language. Talking to a dog like a baby is fine until he poops on the carpet; then, it's time to reprimand him. Some folks say not to say "no" to him, to encourage good behavior. But a dog doesn't know the difference between "no" and "Rex Grossman." My dog's name is Dino, so he hears "no" all the time. In between the "bad boy"s and the "whosduhbesboyinduhwholewideworl"s, I just talk to him like I talk to anybody else. It's cheaper than therapy.

I talk to mine in a normal voice and only in a raised voice if they do something wrong (Like last night, when the lab got into the garbage for the umteenth-million time).
One of my friends talks only baby talk to her 2 year old dog and the poor thing gets scared to death when people are around it talking in a "normal" voice tone (Shakes, hides, pees) and only responds to baby talk.

Wow! Can't you see dogs in the wild talking to each other in baby talk? How funny are you! What they love is you talking to them like a Martian or squirrel or sumpin'! Now wonder he's amused!

I'll just say this much my puppy is like my daughter to me if she does good things she gets rubs in her belly and a treat, but if she does something bad she dosent get anything but we talk to her and show her what is the correct way to do things, in other words she like a human you treat them like your own.

I talk baby talk to all four of mine. Unlike human children, they don't need to know the proper pronunciation for words!

It depends on what you are doing. Training requires a firm voice...not loud...just firm.....rewards are the baby talk and excitement and treats. They will learn the difference.

I do that with my dogs and its nice you ask them what they want and most times theyll respond. Right now my dog is sitting in the chair looking outside watching for the birds. And i ask him do you see a bird and he looks for the bird.
