We are having an office pool and are drawing pole positions for the entire season. People are worried about getting the lower pole positions. So far we only have 10 people in the pool, so no one is going to have a bad position. We are just trying to show them that the number 1 position doesn't always win. Anyone know where we can find numbers online?

19 drivers won poles in 2006 in a total of 36 races
of these 19 drivers they had 15 winners
so every 2.4 races a driver won the pole he won the race
15 winners from pole divided by 36 races is 41%

If you want more people in you should either redraw weekly or do something else to even out the playing field. Not that pole winners have that high of a winning percentage but it would be discouraging to have, let's say the 20th guy each week. Last year Kahne did it 3 times (March 20 at Atlanta, April 9 at Texas and June 18 at Michigan), Hamlin twice at both Pocono races and Harvick once on September 17 at New Hampshire International Speedway. That's 6 times in 36 races, or 16.666666666...% of the time. In 2005 it happened 4 times (11.111...%), 2004 (4 times again) and 2003 it happened 5 times (13.8888...%). You can check the rest if you want, just change the year.

I don't know for sure, but it's not that high, especially in todays time in NASCAR. Back in the day when there wasn't as many cars capable of winning the races the pole sitter always had the best shot, but now there are always 20 to 25 cars with equal chances at winning each race.
