Why does the US ally itself with Britain when Britain was involved in collusion with Loyalist terrorists against innocent people in Ireland. I t has recently been proven by independent enquiries that Loyalist death squads wre in the pay of British intelligence throughout the troubles when they murdered countless innocent Catholics. America has a large Irish Catholic population who gave their support to the Irish Republican Volunteers who defended the Irish people against the British and their colleagues in the Loyalist terrorist groups like the UVF and UDA. The US government however supported the Brits throughout this despite the fact that America has also suffered from British imperialism in the past

To Martin, check your facts. The report by the police ombundsman last month found that the British security services colluded with a North Belfast UVF unit in over a dozen murders of Catholics in the 1990's. This was actually an enquiry by BRITISH police that found this. This is only the tip of the iceberg as it does not include the Brian Nelson affair, the Dublin/ Monaghan bombing, Miami showband killings and countless others. It is a known fact that the British were involved in terrorism on a massive scale and they use their fight against the IRA as an excuse for this

A better question would be - why did Britain ally itself with BUSH?

I thought they were smarter than that.

What time frames are you talking about? If you mean current affairs, news reports show that the Secretary of Defence Robert Gates "Recognizing Britain’s tremendous contributions to the war on terror". Defense Secretary Robert Gates met U.S. Ambassador Robert Holmes Tuttle. Gates also met with Prime Minister Tony Blair and Defense Minister Des Browne to discuss the new Iraq plan. There will always be times when one needs to "ally" themselves, rather than go at it alone. History has proven that timing is everything right?

Gates said in his previous government service he had a good, close working relationship with America’s British allies and that he looks forward to the same sort of relationship as defense secretary.

You forget that british troops where initially sent to n.ireland to protect the CATHOLIC community from the loyalists.britain wasnt supporting the loyalist death squads they where just trying to stop the IRA who is the enemy of the UVF(does the saying "the enemy of my enemy is also my friend" come in here ?) i dont think so.you have to remember also that america has far more british decendants than irish,it was these british decendants that made things like the decleration of independence and saying about british imperialism is just daft the u.s had a civil war does that mean they shouldnt side with each other??british imperialism is what made america what it is, remember that!

Dear Sean D, maybe I'm stupid. No joke intended. But I thought and was hoping the troubles were over as I' ve heard no more about it for years. But I belonged to an organization with a heavy Catholic Irish membership and they made no bones about sending help to the I.R.A. One of the guys brother was an elected U.S. official. A U.S. official, not some little local politician. I truly hope it is over and you guys can work it out. I'd hate to see good Irishmen be compared to Shite and Sunnies. God bless.

Do not confuse our alignment with Britain as a statement of position on the Irish issue. The alliance is based on defense of our countries against terror in a time when the rest of Europe, Russia and China place their cash flow ahead of morality. You should not infer any connection between the US and Britain being an acknowledgment of support in actions against Ireland.

ties between america and the brits derive from early recogition of rhe threats in the 1940s that fascist germany and japan represented to the whole world,as it was then.britain resisted the germans early and effectively while fdr nudged this country away from neutrality and toward rearmament which eventually won the war. .both countries have had blind spots in their treatment of catholic irish in gb and black & native indians in the us,and are therefore imperfect representatives of democracies,a continued peaceful prosperous ireland might involve hearings of national reconciliation such as occured in south africa post apartheid.after 2 or 3 generations of irish young folks have sufficient education, jobs and freedom from revenge shootings, well seven hundred years after the death of william wallace, and six hundred ten years after my great uncle sean was killed in 1916 during the easter uprising peace between brits & irish, peace might break out at any moment

How about a link to those outlandish allegations so we can "check our facts"?

Dude, the police are not the British government, the same as Americans who supported the IRA were not the American government.

We love the Brits. Our country probably is more like Britain than any other. Soon, maybe we can ally ourselves with Mexico since they will all be over here.
